Material and workmanship

The Podstakannik features the same classicist column structure as our "The Master" set: acanthus volutes, laurel wreath with bow in the central medallion, bail handle with pearl rim, highly polished 925 silver. The difference lies in the medallion itself: instead of an empty field, it bears the Russian double-headed eagle in partial gilding – frontally with outstretched wings, both heads slightly turned to the side, crown visible in profile, and on the chest, the smaller shield with Saint George. Only the coat of arms elements are gilded; the rest of the set remains highly polished silver – this gold-on-silver contrast is a typical design element in Russian table silver tradition. The same principle is repeated in the "Edinstvo" (Russian for "unity") teaspoon: the oval stem crown bears the gilded double-headed eagle medallion with a golden rocaille border, while the stem and bowl remain classic highly polished. The "Tschajny" checkered crystal glass with its cut geometric pattern is a replaceable consumable part and can be replaced if needed.

The double-headed eagle is much older than its Russian context – the first depictions are found among the Hittites, later with the East Roman emperors in Constantinople, in the Middle Ages as the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire, the House of Habsburg, and Serbian, Montenegrin, and Albanian royal houses. Ivan III of Moscow adopted the symbol in 1497 after his marriage to Sophia Palaiologina, the niece of the last Byzantine emperor. Care

This set requires particular caution regarding the gilding, which differs from the blackened sets in our line. Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth – never in the dishwasher, never use silver polish on the gilded areas, as the gold layer is thin. If the silver surfaces tarnish, a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive grains, used exclusively on the silver, never on the gold, will help. For heavier soiling of the coat of arms, lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, a soft brush, and subsequent patting dry are sufficient – no cleaning pastes. After use, wipe dry and store in the case. The checkered glass is dishwasher-safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing keeps it gentler and clearer.
