Description
Description
The double-headed eagle is one of Europe's oldest sovereign symbols — and remains one of the most impressive. When you see the Russian double-headed eagle on 925 silver, gilded, plastically raised against a polished silver background, you immediately understand why this two-headed bird has adorned coins, coats of arms, and ceremonial pieces for centuries: it looks in two directions, wears a crown, scepter, and orb, and exudes a blend of power and dignity that no other heraldic animal concentrates so effectively.
Our "Double-Headed Eagle" teaglass holder set from ArgentA is the heraldic variant in our tea line: a Podstakannik made of 925 sterling silver with a central heraldic medallion featuring the gilded Russian double-headed eagle. It also includes the "Edinstvo" ("Unity") teaspoon with the same gilded emblem at the end of the handle and a classic checkerboard crystal glass. All presented in a velvet-lined premium navy blue case — ready for gifting or display.

View Gift SetsThe Double-Headed Eagle — A History Between Byzantium and Today
The two-headed eagle is much older than one might think. Early depictions can be found among the Hittites (2,000 BCE), and later among the Eastern Roman emperors in Constantinople. In the Middle Ages, it became the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the House of Habsburg, the Serbian, Montenegrin, and Albanian royal houses — and in 1497, Ivan III of Moscow adopted the symbol after his marriage to Sophia Palaiologina, the niece of the last Byzantine Emperor. This made the double-headed eagle the coat of arms of Russia.
What does it mean? The two heads look east and west — Eurasia in one image. The three crowns above represent sovereignty (in the current Russian interpretation: for the three united Grand Principalities). The scepter and orb in its claws are the classic insignia of a sovereign. On its chest, the eagle bears a smaller shield with St. George slaying the dragon — the old city emblem of Moscow.
On our holder, the double-headed eagle is incorporated into the oval heraldic medallion, with gold gilding on a silver background — you see it frontally with outstretched wings, both heads turned slightly to the side, the crown(s) visible in profile.
Gilding as an Accent — How it Makes the Coat of Arms Shine
The set is marked "с позолотой" (with gilding), more precisely: "ч/п" (частичная позолота — partial gilding). This means: only the heraldic elements are gilded; the rest is highly polished 925 silver. This combination has a very deliberate optical effect:
- The warm gold immediately draws the eye to the double-headed eagle — your gaze goes directly to the coat of arms.
- The surrounding silver medallion (with laurel wreath and ribbon) remains classically silvery — as a "frame."
- The gold-on-silver contrast appears more valuable than monochrome gold and is very typical in Russian silverware tradition (see Fabergé, Sazikov, Ovchinnikov).
The same applies to the "Edinstvo" spoon: the oval handle crown with the double-headed eagle is gilded, while the handle and bowl are classic highly polished silver. This makes the spoon a small heraldic jewel.
What's in the set?
- Podstakannik "Heraldic Eagle": 925 silver, height approx. 95 mm, diameter approx. 72 mm, approx. 128 g. Classicist column structure with a central oval medallion featuring the gilded double-headed eagle. Acanthus volutes, laurel wreath with ribbon, loop handle with pearl edge. Highly polished with partial gilding.
- Teaspoon "Edinstvo" ("Unity"): 925 silver, length approx. 130 mm, approx. 23 g. Classic handle with an oval handle crown — gilded double-headed eagle medallion with a golden rocaille border. Highly polished bowl.
- Crystal glass "Chayny" (Checkerboard): classic Russian tea glass, approx. 200 ml, 65 × 100 mm, cut checkerboard pattern. Replaceable consumable part, easy to substitute.
- Premium Navy Blue Case: velvet-lined, approx. 132 × 132 × 165 mm. Protects the silver from air contact and serves as the ready-made gift packaging.
Related to the "Master" Holder — Same Design, Different Medallion
Those familiar with our "The Master" set will immediately recognize the construction: the same classicist column structure, the same loop handle with pearl edge, the same acanthus volutes, the same laurel wreath in the medallion. ArgentA uses the same holder model from the Classic. Posuda line — and fills the central medallion differently depending on the variant:
- In "The Master," the field is empty — ready for your own engraving (initials, coat of arms, logo, date).
- In the "Double-Headed Eagle," the field already bears the gilded Russian state emblem — no room for engraving, but a ready-made heraldic statement.
So you can choose according to the occasion: personal engraving (Master) or ready-made heraldry (Double-Headed Eagle). Both sets are technically and stylistically related and also complement each other on the table.
When is the Double-Headed Eagle Set particularly suitable?
- Collectors of historical Russian symbolism: heraldry enthusiasts, coin collectors, Russia travelers.
- Russian-German families: a piece of homeland memory in 925 silver, often intended as an heirloom.
- Historians, Slavists, diplomats, consulate staff — anyone working with Russian history and tradition.
- Lovers of European heraldry in general: the double-headed eagle is also the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the House of Habsburg — those who appreciate that will also appreciate this piece.
- A gift for business partners with Russian connections, or as a souvenir for travelers to St. Petersburg or Moscow.
- Heirloom and generational gift — value-retaining, collectible, ready for gifting in its case.
Material and Care
925 Sterling Silver, highly polished, with partial gilding on the heraldic elements. When it comes to care — unlike blackened sets — special caution is required for the gilding:
- Clean holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth — never in the dishwasher, never use silver polish on the gilded areas, as the gold layer is very thin.
- If silver surfaces tarnish: use a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, only on the silver, never on the gold.
- Wipe dry after use, store in the case — protects from air contact.
- Checkerboard glass: dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle; hand washing is gentler and keeps it crystal clear.
- For heavier soiling of the emblem: lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, soft brush, rinse, pat dry — no cleaning pastes.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Double-Headed Eagle Set
What does the double-headed eagle actually mean?
The two-headed eagle is one of the oldest sovereign symbols — it originated in Byzantium, was the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire, the House of Habsburg, several Balkan kingdoms, and since 1497, also of Russia. The two heads represent looking in both cardinal directions (Eurasia), the three crowns for sovereignty, and the scepter and orb for the sovereign's power. On its chest, it bears St. George with the dragon — the coat of arms of Moscow.
What does "partial gilding" ("с позолотой" / "ч/п") mean?
Only the heraldic elements are gilded — the double-headed eagle on the holder and the emblem medallion on the spoon. The rest of the set is highly polished 925 silver. This gold-on-silver contrast is very typical in Russian silverware tradition and visually highlights the emblem.
How long does the gilding last?
With careful treatment, many decades. Important: do not rub silver polish over the gilded areas (the gold layer is very thin), no harsh sponges, no dishwasher. Clean with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth.
Is the set only for Russia collectors?
No. The double-headed eagle is also the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the House of Habsburg — it has a broad European tradition. Suitable for anyone who appreciates heraldic symbolism and classic silverware tradition.
Can I have the set engraved additionally?
Limitedly. The emblem medallion on the holder already features the double-headed eagle. If you want an engraving, there is space on the smooth back or at the end of the spoon handle. However, for an engraving-focused set, we recommend our "The Master" set with an empty emblem field.
How big is the drinking glass?
The checkerboard crystal glass holds approx. 200 ml — ideal for a classic Russian teacup with strong black tea. Note: Argenta supplies either checkerboard cut or diamond cut depending on availability; both fit the holder and can be reordered.
Is the set dishwasher safe?
No, neither the silver nor the gilded parts. Please clean the holder and spoon by hand only. The checkerboard crystal glass is robust and dishwasher safe on a short, gentle cycle — but hand washing is still gentler.
What is the difference from "The Master" holder?
Both use the same classicist design from ArgentA's Classic. Posuda line. In "The Master," the central medallion is empty — you fill it with your own engraving (initials, coat of arms, date). In the "Double-Headed Eagle," the gilded Russian eagle is already in the medallion — ready-made heraldry instead of personalization.
Who is the manufacturer?
The set comes from ArgentA, the silver manufactory from Kolchugino in the Vladimir Oblast (Russia). Classic line "Classic. Posuda" — complete in-house production from smelting to hand-polishing, ECO-certified 925 Sterling Silver.
