Material and Workmanship

The round lid features a floral niello medallion with a central garnet cabochon on the front, and a brooch pin with a clasp on the back – the lid can be removed and worn as a brooch. The cylindrical body of the casket, the wide band with dense niello ornamentation and additional garnets, is hinged and opens into a bracelet that can be worn around the wrist; the inside is completely gold-plated. The underside features a golden repoussé floral ornament on the outside, and a real mirror on the inside, framed by a golden edge with four additional garnet cabochons.

A total of seven garnets are used: one oval cabochon in the center of the lid and six smaller cabochons distributed on the bracelet and mirror frame. The rich red of the garnets forms the fourth color in this piece, alongside silver, niello black, and 24-karat gold.
