Description

Three Orthodox devotional items crafted from 925 Sterling silver, presented in a shared gift box: a folding icon of the Kazan Mother of God with a leather cover and integrated prayer text, a guardian angel silver spoon with niello motif, and a cross pendant with niello embellishment. Three pieces, three functions — the icon for a home altar or travel, the spoon as a baptismal keepsake and functional memento, the cross for wearing around the neck or hanging by the bed. Together, they form a compact Orthodox gift set for baptism, birth, communion, and confirmation.

What makes this set particularly unusual is that it combines three devotional occasions in one gift. The folding icon opens for prayer at home or while traveling. The guardian angel spoon accompanies the child or recipient at the table. The cross pendant is the most personal form — worn on the body, every day.

Three pieces, three functions — the structure of the set

An Orthodox devotional gift rarely consists of just one object. Orthodox tradition knows several carriers of devotion — the icon as visual devotion, the cross as a worn confession, the table pieces as blessed companions in everyday life. This gift set reflects these three carriers in a compressed form. The folding icon is for domestic devotion or travel devotion — it can be placed by the bedside, taken to the hospital, or on the home altar. The guardian angel spoon is the daily devotional piece — with each use, the engraved guardian angel motif reminds. The cross pendant is the personal form — a neck pendant or crib decoration, depending on the occasion.

The material line is consistent across all three pieces: 925 Sterling silver as the base, niello black inlay as a graphic detail, gilding as an accent — on the icon on the saint figures and the prayer border, on the cross pendant on the central hatching, more subtly on the spoon. This common material language visually connects the three pieces into a composition, even if each can be used individually.

Folding icon of the Kazan Mother of God — domestic devotion

The Kazan Mother of God (Казанская икона Божией Матери) is one of the most revered Marian icons in Orthodox Christianity. The original type shows the Mother of God with the Christ Child in half-figure, with a serious, almost stern gaze, without a pronounced smile — the iconographic style appears calm and concentrated, not saccharine. In Russia, it is considered a protective icon of the family, home, and children; its feast day is celebrated twice a year.

The folding icon in this set is a travel and home variant: a foldable silver panel with a leather outer cover, which appears like a small book when closed and reveals the icon when opened. An additional prayer text is incorporated into the interior — Orthodox devotion requires spoken or read prayer, not just the image. Measuring 132 × 69 × 5.8 millimeters, the folding icon is pocket-sized and handbag-friendly; it fits into a travel suitcase and can be placed at a sickbed. The leather cover protects the niello engraving and gilding of the inside from abrasion. This format is a tradition in Orthodox devotional art — travel icons accompanied Russian merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims for centuries.

If you are looking for an independent variant of the Kazan Mother of God — for example, for a second gift pair or as a pure icon without accompanying pieces — you will find the related Kazan Mother of God Baptism Gift Set (SW12656), which combines the folding icon in an alternative set composition.

The Guardian Angel Silver Spoon — devotional piece and table piece at once

The guardian angel spoon is the most practical piece in the set. Measuring 130 × 29 millimeters and weighing around 23 grams, it is the size of a tea or mocha spoon. The guardian angel motif is engraved on the bowl using niello technique: an Orthodox stylized angel with wings, in the visual language of Russian devotional art. In Orthodox tradition, the guardian angel accompanies every baptized person from the day of baptism — it is the most personal, everyday devotional figure, less ceremonial than a saint, but more direct in relation to the individual.

The spoon can be used in two ways: as a pure keepsake, remaining in the gift box and taken out on baptism days or holidays — or as a table spoon for daily use. In the latter case, the guardian angel motif becomes part of the table routine over time, and the spoon functions as a blessed everyday item, as is traditional in many Orthodox families. An engraving on the back of the handle is possible — typically the baptismal name, baptism date, and occasionally the godchild's name. If you are looking for a variant with a guardian angel in colored enamel, you will find it in the assortment under Orthodox Baptism Spoon Guardian Angel Blue-Gold (SW10692) and Guardian Angel Pink-Gold (SW10693) for girls and boys.

The Cross Pendant — personal devotion on the body

Measuring 27 × 15 millimeters and weighing around 2 grams, the cross pendant is the smallest piece in the set — and yet the most personal. The shape follows the Orthodox eight-pointed cross with three crossbars (upper title bar, middle main bar, slanted foot bar), which formally distinguishes Orthodox Christianity from the Catholic or Protestant cross. The niello embellishment fills the center of the cross with dense hatching and gives the silver form optical depth. A carrying loop on the upper crossbar accommodates a standard necklace.

For what occasion the cross pendant is worn depends on the age and occasion. At baptism, it is traditionally given to the godmother or godfather, who then present it to the child for confirmation or their first birthday. In some Orthodox families, the pendant is hung over the crib until the child is old enough to wear it themselves around their neck. For adult gifts — confirmation, communion, a milestone birthday in a religious family — it is given directly for wearing.

SevChern from Veliky Ustyug — Veliky Ustyug niello tradition since 1683

Behind the set is one of Russia's densest niello traditions. The Veliky Ustyug niello art has been documented in writing since 1683 — Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda region became the reference center for this technique in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today's SevChern (Северная чернь, "Northern Niello") manufactory was founded in 1933 as the Artel "Severnaya Chern," transformed into a factory in 1960, and into a state-owned enterprise in 1973. In 1937, a crockery collection from the manufactory received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Today, SevChern holds the state-recognized status of "Folk art handicraft of recognized artistic value" — a protected recognition for historically established craft manufactories.

The niello technique is a separate step in the manufactory's 15-step process: after silver pressing, the motif is hand-engraved, then the niello melt of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur is filled into the depressions and fixed in the kiln. Only then is it polished and stamped. For religious pieces like this set, the gilding stage is added — the saint figures, prayer borders, and cross accents receive a gold tone application, which complements the black-silver contrast of the niello with a third color. More about the technique can be found in the article Niello — the black melt in silver and in the manufactory overview on the theme page SevChern Secrets.

Occasions — when the 3-piece set is suitable

The main occasion is the Orthodox baptism. Godparents look for a gift for the baptized child that not only works on the day of the ceremony but will be carried forward for years. The folding icon remains in the children's or family bedroom, the guardian angel spoon comes out for the first solid food or on birthdays, the cross pendant becomes a necklace as the child grows up. Three pieces, three life stages — that is the logic of this set.

In addition, the set is suitable for three other occasions. For birth, when the Orthodox family welcomes the child and baptism is still a few weeks away — the set can then remain unopened until the baptism ceremony or be used beforehand. For confirmation or communion in religious families, when an accompanying gift for ecclesiastical milestones is sought; in this case, the focus is on the cross and the icon, the guardian angel spoon is the commemorative component. And for a milestone birthday or godchild anniversary within an Orthodox family, when a gift is sought that visibly expresses religious affiliation. If you are looking for a different set configuration, you will find the 3-piece Baptism Gift Set (SW12655) as an alternative variant.

Folding icon, niello, occasion — Answers to the Orthodox gift set

Who is the Kazan Mother of God and why this icon choice?
The Kazan Mother of God (Казанская икона Божией Матери) is one of the most revered Marian icons in Orthodox Christianity. The original type shows the Mother of God with the Christ Child in half-figure, with a serious, calm gaze. In Russia, she is considered a protective icon of the family, home, and children. It is precisely this protective symbolism that makes her a suitable choice for a baptism and birth gift — the icon enters the child's new life as a family protector.

What is a folding icon and what is it used for?
A folding icon is a foldable travel and home icon. In this set, it comes as a silver panel with a leather cover, foldable like a small book. In Orthodox tradition, the folding icon is placed by the bedside, on the home altar, or taken along — on trips, to the hospital, on pilgrimages. A prayer text is also incorporated into the interior of the folding icon, because Orthodox devotion necessarily adds spoken prayer to visual devotion. With a height of 132 millimeters, it fits into any travel bag.

How does the Orthodox cross differ from the Catholic or Protestant cross?
The Orthodox cross has eight points and three crossbars: an upper title bar (for the inscription "I.N.R.I."), a middle main bar (on which the arms were attached) and a slanted foot bar (on which the feet rested). The slanted foot bar is the most important distinguishing feature — it does not appear in the Catholic or Protestant Latin cross. The niello cross in this set follows this exact Orthodox form.

Is engraving possible on the guardian angel spoon?
Yes. There is space for engraving on the back of the guardian angel spoon handle — typically the baptismal name, baptism date, initials, or the godchild's name. When ordering with an engraving request, a free SilberVerse card (10 × 15 cm) is included, individually inscribed with words for the baptism or birth ceremony. Engraving orders are placed via the engraving field in the shopping cart or via a service inquiry.

How do I care for the three pieces?
Three different materials, three care instructions. The folding icon with leather cover is wiped with a dry, soft cloth — no water on the leather, no care products. Keep the inside with niello and gilding dry as well. After use, you can clean the guardian angel spoon by hand with warm water, mild pH-neutral dish soap, and a soft cloth — no dishwasher, as aggressive tabs will damage the niello black inlay. Wipe the cross pendant once or twice a year with a soft cloth; for heavier tarnishing, use a silver polishing cloth, but not on the niello central hatching.

What other Orthodox pieces are available in the assortment?
In the hub Orthodox Gifts made of 925 Silver you will find saint images, name icons, and set configurations. Specifically for icons, see Orthodox Icons made of 925 Silver; for prayer items Prayer Beads; for baptism and confirmation gifts, the hubs Baptism Gifts and Confirmation Gifts.
