Saint Nicholas in the medallion
Description
Who was Saint Nicholas, and why is he on a christening gift? He is the name saint of many children. This christening set in 925 silver shows him in the medallion of the spoon, and a consecrated cross lies with it in the case.
Name patron
Nicholas for the christening child
Here more christening gifts lie side by side.
View christening giftsSaint Nicholas: meaning as a name patron
In the fourth century Nicholas was Bishop of Myra. Orthodox Christians venerate him as a wonderworker and intercessor for children. Those who bear his name often celebrate him as their patron. The picture in the medallion shows this veneration.
In many Orthodox families the name day is celebrated, that is, the feast day of the saint whose name a child bears. The spoon then reminds of it all year round.
Medallion, tendrils, back
The saint holds a book with a cross in his arm; at the edge of the medallion are the letters “Свт. Чуд.”, an abbreviation for “Saint Wonderworker”, and a small crown sits at the top. The silver is blackened on the surface, and a tendril ornament decorates the handle.
On the back of the medallion a blessing in four lines stands in relief, written in Church Slavonic script. It is an invocation of Saint Nicholas. The bowl carries a tendril border on its back.
The dimensions: 113 mm length, 25 mm width, 10 mm height, approx. 13 g weight. The cross: approx. 20 mm, approx. 1 g. The silver weight of the set is approx. 14 g.
Engraving under the medallion
The back of the handle is smooth and mirror-polished. There is room here for 10 to 12 characters, for example a first name. To do this, add the engraving service to your cart as well and enter your desired text under “order note at checkout”.
The medallion and cross remain without engraving.
Consecration and certificate
The spoon and cross are consecrated by the Orthodox parish of the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin, the Svyato-Pokrovsky Church in Kolchugino. The certificate comes with the set. This is not a promise of protection.
Who the set suits
If a child is called Nicholas, Nikolai or Klaus, the saint is his name patron. But the set also suits families who value Nicholas as an intercessor for children. The name on the handle turns the spoon into a personal piece.
Cross, eyelet and cord
A white cord belongs with the cross; blue or pink is available on request, and a note in the “order note at checkout” is enough. On the cross you will notice the trefoil ends, the corpus and the eyelet through which you later pull a ribbon. In the photos no cord hangs on it.
Blackened or gold-plated
Choose between this set and the christening set gold-plated Saint Nicholas. Further motifs in the series are Our Lady of Kazan and Christ Pantocrator.
Blackened Saint Nicholas christening set: answers for godparents
What do you give for an Orthodox christening?
Usual gifts are a christening cross, icon, candle and silver spoon. This set combines cross and spoon with the picture of the name saint.
How does the engraving work?
The engraving service goes into the cart in addition, and your text goes into the “order note at checkout” at the end of the order. We discuss the details afterwards. If it is not technically possible, we refund the flat fee.
How do I care for the blackened surface?
Rinse by hand in lukewarm water and dry with a soft cloth. A silver polishing cloth does no harm: on the light, raised areas you can polish as usual, and over the dark recesses a gentle stroke is enough. It must never go into the dishwasher.
