Christ Pantocrator is the central icon of Orthodoxy — the Almighty Ruler, with his right hand raised in blessing, and the Gospel in his left. What's in the Case

Two pieces with two different life paths. The spoon measures 11.3 centimeters and weighs approximately 14 grams — short enough for a child's hand, heavy enough to feel substantial. It will remain in the home and later be displayed in a cabinet. The cross pendant is two centimeters long and weighs one gram; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. Together, the set weighs about 15 grams of 925 sterling silver.

Christ Pantocrator — the Icon Where Everything Begins

"Вседержитель," the Almighty Ruler, is the central icon of Orthodoxy. It depicts Christ as a bust: his right hand raised in blessing, the Gospel in his left, and a cruciform nimbus around his head. In every Orthodox church, this image looks down from the dome; in the icon corner of a home, it usually takes pride of place. One who places a child under this blessing chooses not just one saint among many, but the image to which all others refer.

On the medallion, the Cyrillic abbreviations ІС ХС for "Jesus Christ" are inscribed on the right and left — the usual spelling on icons since Byzantine times. The handle below features openwork tendrils in ancient Russian ornament, framed by narrow crossbars towards the end of the stem; the same design language known from icon frames.

This spoon design is available with three different icons — in addition to this motif, there's Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and the Kazan Mother of God. The spoon body is the same for all; only the medallion at the head of the handle and the blessing on the back are exchanged. This allows those with multiple godchildren to choose three cohesive yet distinct gifts.

Antique Blackening — And What It Isn't

The depressions in the icon medallion and between the tendrils are darkened. This makes the figure and ornament stand out plastically, because light and shadow are no longer swallowed by the polished silver. This is achieved by a superficial blackening, with which the manufacturer deliberately ages the piece in advance.

There are two things you should know about this. First: This is not niello. Niello is a black metal paste that is melted into recessed lines and firmly bonded with the silver — a completely different technique that originated in Veliky Ustyug. The blackening here is on the surface. Second, it is not lacquer or paint, so it cannot chip off, and at the same time acts as a protective layer against further darkening — the piece will look the same in five years as it does today. The raised areas can be carefully brightened with a silver polishing cloth, without the depressions becoming lighter.

The spoon and cross are made of 925 sterling silver without any additional coating and polished by hand with cotton buffs to a mirror shine — without rhodium plating. What you see is the silver itself.

The Back: Blessing, Tendrils, and Space for a Name

The spoon is also intricately designed on the back — something only visible when it's turned over. On the back of the medallion, there's an embossed blessing in five lines of Cyrillic script: "Господи Иисусе Христе, Сыне Божий, помилуй мя" — "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." This is the Jesus Prayer — the most well-known phrase in Orthodox piety, silently repeated for centuries. Thus, the icon is represented on one side by an image, and on the other by words.

The back of the bowl features a circumferential border of delicate spiral tendrils, enclosing a mirror-polished central field and converging into a denser tendril motif at the tip of the spoon. A detail that no one sees while eating — yet it is still there. This is precisely how one recognizes a piece that was not simply made for first impressions.

In between, on the back of the stem below the medallion, the surface remains deliberately smooth and mirror-polished. Here is space for an engraving: a short name, and with concise lettering, additionally the baptismal date. More would not fit — the stem tapers downwards. But this is precisely enough for the one line that makes a gift a specific gift.

Consecrated in Kolchugino

The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery — by the local Orthodox community of the Svyato-Pokrovsky Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir region, Alexandrov Eparchy of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate to this effect is included in the case.

How to Recognize Real Silver

Each piece comes with a sealed tag from the factory. It lists the manufacturer, description, item number, silver weight, and a unique identification number (UIN). In addition, there is the stamped 925 hallmark, the manufacturer's name mark, the ArgentA mark, and the quality control stamp.

The name mark is clearly structured: The first letter stands for the year of manufacture, the second for the responsible state testing authority, and the remaining ones for the company. The UIN also allows the piece to be looked up in the state register for precious metals. Sounds technical — but in everyday life, it is precisely what verifiably makes the difference between silver and silver-plated.

The Orthodox Cross

The pendant is small yet fully detailed: the ends of the beams terminate in a trefoil shape, the corpus is in relief in the center, and below it, the ornament continues to the foot. The three-leaf ends symbolize the Trinity in Christian iconography; this form is widely used in Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains brightly polished — without enamel, without gilding. It is the same cross in all sets of this series.

Care: To Preserve the Design

After use, warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher, no abrasive cleaners, and especially no silver dip cleaner — such a bath would dissolve the dark depressions and strip the piece of its unique character. From what age is the spoon suitable?
As cutlery from the age of weaning. It is usually given earlier — for baptism, often even at birth.

Does the blackening come off when washing?
No. The blackening is not paint or lacquer, but a surface treatment of the silver. Warm water and dish soap do not harm it. Only silver dip baths are taboo.

Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes — technically, engraving is possible on this spoon, but it can only be ordered upon request. Both go together and one does not restrict the other:

Technically: The back of the stem below the medallion is smooth and mirror-polished — a blank space specifically for this purpose. There is room for a short first name; with concise writing, the baptismal date can also fit below. Approximately 20 characters is a guideline, not a firm promise: the stem tapers downwards, so the writing style also plays a role.

Is the set for a girl or a boy?
For both. It does without colored enamel and is gender-neutral — practical if you are giving it before birth or do not know the gender.

Is the set also suitable for a Catholic or Protestant baptism?
The craftsmanship has an Orthodox character — those who consciously seek this will find exactly that here. Does it come with a chain?
No. The set includes a spoon and a pendant; the parents choose the chain later to suit the age.
