On both pieces, the plastically protruding parts feature gold—and because the gold plating comes from a single production run, the tones match. If purchased separately, they may deviate minimally, which only becomes noticeable when both are placed side by side.

When Size and Gold Come Together

Both characteristics of this set aim for the same thing: visibility over distance.

The size ensures that the cup rises above plates, glasses, and candles—a prerequisite for it to be noticed at all at a long table.

The partial gilding solves a second problem: from five or six meters, chased silver blurs into a uniformly bright surface. The relief is there, but no longer legible. Gold reflects warmer and darker; the color difference carries further than the height difference. Thus, the structure of the piece is preserved, even where the ornament itself blurs.

Together, this results in an ensemble that, at a table for twenty people, is recognizable from every seat as what it is meant to be: the centerpiece.

A Rule for Both Parts

What protrudes sculpturally is gilded—on the cup, the freestanding leaf tips and the leaves on the knop; on the plate, the four corner volutes. The flat ornament in between remains silver.

Because the same rule applies to both pieces, the gold is at the same level of perception. Sets that gild arbitrarily—a band here, a surface there—appear restless when placed side by side; this one does not.

It is made in two stages: First, both parts are completely finished, then all areas that are to remain silver are covered, and only the exposed parts are gilded. With protruding leaf tips with undersides and undercuts, this covering is the actual work.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks—for the four promises of liberation from the Exodus story. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu.

It belongs to the prophet Eliyahu, whose coming heralds future redemption. Towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him—in many families, a child goes to open it.

Material and Origin

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is twofold in a cup: Chasing only succeeds in solid silver—a plating would tear when worked—and the interior gilding protects exactly where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled for decades needs both. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer indicates the material.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased—driven into the silver by hand with punches.

Engraving

On the cup, the smooth foot rim with a diameter of approx. 15 cm remains, on the plate, the mirror and the back. Engraving is not done on the gilded parts—the gold layer would be damaged there. Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly—including the inside of the cup. No dishwasher. Only wipe the gilded parts dry: gold is softer than silver; polishing paste would attack the thin layer. Work carefully on the freestanding leaf tips; grasp the cup by the knop or base. The Most Elaborate Set in the Series

For collectors, this is the point where the series peaks before it transitions into another category: The ensemble with the 50 cm cup is larger but without gilding, and due to its size, it belongs more in a hall than at a family table.

Without gold, the same size level offers the Jumbo set, one size smaller the partially gilded set with approx. 28.5 cm.

As the largest gilded set in the series, this set is a piece to display. In a display case with a high compartment or on a sideboard, it remains visible throughout the year—and slowly becomes more contrasted as the silver parts darken and the golden ones remain as they are.
