Two Surfaces for a Dedication

For fully chased pieces, only the foot rim remains for an engraving – limited space, usually just enough for a name and a year.

The Light version fundamentally changes this. The cup leaves the upper half of the bowl polished; the plate has a wide, smooth rim. Together, these create two easily readable surfaces at eye level.

This opens up a possibility often desired for ritual objects: two separate dedications. On the cup, the occasion; on the plate, the donors. Or: one text today, the other in a later generation. For those considering a set as an heirloom, this provides the perfect foundation.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which people drink – for the four promises of liberation. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet whose coming heralds future redemption; towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened.

The cup is filled to the brim; the fullness represents abundant blessings. Whatever overflows is caught by the plate.

What "Light" Also Does

Polished silver reflects light as a surface, while chased silver breaks it into many small reflections. By candlelight – and Seder night takes place in the evening – the difference is clear: the Light version reflects the table and the people around it, instead of shimmering itself.

Which effect one prefers is a matter of taste. Both versions come from the same series and can even be mixed – a dense cup on a Light plate, for example, if one deliberately wants to create contrast.

Material and Origin

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is twofold in a cup: chasing is only possible in solid silver – a plating would tear during hammering – and the inner gilding protects exactly where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled for decades needs both. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer indicates the material.

The inside of the cup is gilded because it stands brim-full with wine for hours, and silver reacts to acid.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased – hammered into the silver by hand with punches.

Engraving

Care

Wash by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly – including the inside of the cup. No dishwasher. Rinse promptly after the Seder. The Two Parts Individually

The Light set combines the Light cup approx. 30 cm and the Light plate approx. 26 cm. Both are available individually – the set merely spares you the decision of which plate belongs to which cup.

Why a plate at all? The cup stands brim-full all evening. When pouring and when opening the door for the prophet, the table moves; a plate catches what goes over the rim and takes the risk off the tablecloth. That is the practical reason. The second is optical: the plate elevates the cup from the surface of the place setting.

Those who prefer the more densely chased version will find it in the Signature set.

When displayed, the Light set is the calmer choice: the smooth bowl reflects instead of breaking the light, and thus appears larger from a distance. If you want to leave the ensemble out all year round, this is better than a fully chased version.
