Why Square with a Round Depression

The shape addresses two requirements simultaneously. The round depression accommodates the base of the cup—it stands firmly, doesn't slip, and won't tip over even if the plate is lifted. And it catches anything that overflows when pouring to the brim.

The surrounding square gives the whole a frame that stands out on the set table. A round plate would disappear among round tableware; a square aligns with table edges and stands out.

During Kiddush, the cup is deliberately filled to the brim—the fullness represents abundant blessing. The plate is therefore not an accessory, but part of the ritual.

Partial Gilding and Patina

On the four sides are leaf motifs that are gilded, while the rest remains silver. In silversmithing, this is called partial gilding: the piece is first fully chased, then the areas that are to remain silver are covered, and only the exposed parts are gilded.

The background between the tendrils is deliberately oxidized, meaning darkened. The contrast brings out both the silver ornament and the golden leaves. These dark zones are intentional and should be preserved during cleaning—polishing them away robs the plate of its depth.

Material and Origin

A silver-plated piece could not be manufactured this way—the plating would tear under the hallmark. And it cannot be polished repeatedly because the layer would become thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the craftsmanship during creation and care over generations. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer certifies it.

Care

Wash by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. No polishing paste on the dark areas—it would remove the intentional oxidation.
