Why a Plate Under the Cup?

During Kiddush, the cup is filled to the brim – fuller than one would usually pour a glass. This is intentional: the fullness represents an abundance of blessings. Practically, this means that some liquid will spill when lifting and setting down the cup.

That's exactly what the plate is for. It catches what overflows, protecting tablecloths and wood. At the same time, it visually elevates the cup: on a set table with dishes, candles, and bread, the Kiddush cup would otherwise be lost among everything else – on its own plate, it gets a stage.

Therefore, both the cup and the plate in this line are offered individually and as a set. Those who already own a cup – often an heirloom – can simply add the plate.

Rim and Center

When it comes to plates, two zones are distinguished: the rim, the encircling edge, and the center, the flat area in the middle. Here, the rim carries all the ornamentation, while the center remains smooth.

This has a functional reason: the cup stands on the center. A chased surface underneath would be wobbly, and wine residues could not be completely removed from the depressions. The smooth base is the practical solution – and the more beautiful one, because the cup stands on it as if on a mirror.

The rim is hand-chased: hammered into the silver with punches. No section repeats the previous one exactly – this is how you recognize handcrafted work compared to an embossed piece.

Material and Origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced in this way – the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be repolished indefinitely because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver can withstand both: the handcraft during its creation and the care over generations. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer confirms this.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased depressions of the rim.
