Material and Workmanship

The upper third of each glass features a wide niello band with stylized floral medallions, interspersed with a polished silver surface with gilded accents. A second, narrower niello band finishes the glass at the base. Niello is a dark silver-sulfur alloy that is hand-melted into the engraved lines and permanently bonded with the silver – it does not fade, but becomes more contrasting with each polish. The interior gilding of the glasses and tray protects the silver from alcohol and acid and provides a warm golden hue when pouring. The set is manufactured at the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, a center of Russian niello silversmithing.

Usage and Occasions

Six glasses cover a full table setting: an anniversary among friends, a company anniversary, a family celebration where multiple generations toast. As a gift, the set is particularly suitable for discerning men – for a milestone birthday, retirement, or as a business partner gift. Care

Wash by hand, lukewarm water, no dish soap, no silver dip – that would damage the gilding. The niello surfaces require no special care; they remain permanently dark on their own.

What is traditionally drunk from these glasses?

Classically ice-cold vodka, but also fruit brandies, liqueurs, or fine gin. It is usually served with Zakuski such as pickled cucumbers, herring, or black bread.

Why is the inside gilded?

Fine gold protects the silver from corrosion by alcohol and acid, imparts no taste of its own, and creates a warm contrast to the dark niello on the outside.
