Chased and Cast — Two Techniques in One Piece

The border of this tray is created in two steps. First, the scrollwork is chased: hand-driven into the silver with punches, stroke by stroke. Then, the cast elements are added—elements separately cast in molds and then soldered on.

The reason is technical. Chasing deforms sheet metal; beyond a certain height, the material tears. If stronger relief is desired, it must be cast. Combining both techniques in one piece requires that the transitions are seamless—the solder joints must not be visible, and the casting must continue the language of the chasing.

The difference is discernible in the light: Cast parts have sharp edges and deep shadows, while chased parts taper off more softly.

Material and Origin

For a piece of this craftsmanship, the material determines its manufacturability: The chased border could not be produced on a surface—it would tear during the chasing process. And a tray that is used can only withstand polishing if the silver is solid throughout. It is hallmarked by the manufacturer in Italy.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The richly chased line is the house's signature.

Square — What This Changes

The square is the organizing shape on a table. It aligns with table edges, can be placed next to another square, and utilizes a corner better than a circle. On a square or rectangular table, it appears calmer than a round platter, which always seems to float a little.

Approx. 42 × 42 cm can hold a carafe with six glasses, a coffee set for four, or a selection of pastries. The large rounded center provides a stable base for everything placed on it.

Engraving

The center is large, flat, and completely free of ornament—well suited for a centered monogram, a coat of arms, or a dedication with a date. What It's Used For

Aperitifs with a carafe and glasses, coffee service for four, a selection of chocolates after dinner, breakfast in bed. At receptions, it carries filled glasses; on the table, it remains as a base around which things are set.

On a sideboard, it becomes a permanent surface for a standing arrangement—carafe, two glasses, a candelabrum. Silver that is used develops a depth over the years that does not occur in a cabinet: The raised areas remain bright because they are touched, while the depressions darken. It is precisely this difference that defines antique table silver.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the solder joints of the cast parts. When drying, include the deep parts of the casting. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker tone can remain in the depressions, making the relief more three-dimensional.
