Material and workmanship

Niello is not a paint or varnish. It is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into finely engraved depressions. On this plate, that means: The stylized flowers, buds, and tendrils of the border are first hand-engraved into the silver, then the niello compound is heated and introduced into the grooves. After cooling, the surface is polished until the deep black niello is flush with the shiny silver. The pattern runs continuously and symmetrically around the entire rim – without beginning, without end. The inner surface shows concentric lathe grooves, a guilloche turning work with a long history in Russian silversmith tradition: fine, even grooves that reflect light more softly and diffusely than a smoothly polished surface. Two surfaces, one piece – both made of 925 sterling silver, both durable.

Care

925 sterling silver with niello decoration is easier to care for than many people think. Hand washing with warm water and mild dish soap is sufficient, a soft cloth completes the cleaning. No dishwasher, no aggressive cleaning agents, no silver dip. A slight tarnish can be removed with a silver polishing cloth – the niello itself does not change color or depth.
