Material and workmanship

Niello is neither paint nor lacquer. It is a black inlay that is fused into finely engraved lines, ground flush, and polished – like ink in silver. On this plate, this means: The stylized blossoms, buds, and vines of the border are first hand-engraved into the silver, then the niello compound is heated and applied into the grooves. After cooling, the surface is ground until the deep black niello is flush with the polished silver. The pattern runs continuously and symmetrically around the entire rim – without beginning or end. The inner surface features concentric grooves, a guilloché turning technique with a long history in the Russian silversmithing tradition: fine, uniform grooves that reflect light more softly and diffusely than a smooth, polished surface. Two finishes, one piece – both made of 925 sterling silver, both permanent.

Usage and occasions

This plate is not merely a decorative piece, but genuine silverware – for fruits, pastries, small dishes, and for the set table on special evenings. With a diameter of 150 mm, it is compact enough for an individual plate and large enough for a serving. As a gift, it is suitable for those who appreciate fine table culture: for weddings, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or as a host gift. Combined with other SevChern pieces, you can create an ensemble with a consistent signature – the same niello technique, the same origin.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

Upon verification, a personal engraving is possible – on the back of the plate, such as a name, a date, or a short sentence. Upon request, we can include a personal SilberVerse card in photo format (15 × 10 cm) – individually designed, appropriate for the occasion, and free of charge.

Care

925 sterling silver with niello decoration is easier to care for than many think. Hand washing with warm water and mild dish soap is sufficient; a soft cloth completes the cleaning. No dishwasher, no aggressive cleaning agents, no silver immersion baths. A light layer of tarnish can be removed with a silver polishing cloth – the niello itself does not change in color or depth.

Frequently asked questions

What is niello – and why is the motif permanent?
Niello is a black inlay that is fused into the engraved lines, ground flush, and polished – like ink in silver. Afterward, it sits flush with the silver surface – firmly bonded to the metal, not applied on top. It cannot peel off, chip, or fade.

What are the grooves on the inner surface?
The concentric grooves (guilloché) are created by turning on a lathe. A traditional process in the Russian silversmithing tradition that gives the inner surface a fine texture and special light reflection.

For which occasions is this plate suitable?
As a serving plate for fruits, pastries, or small dishes – for the set table, special evenings, or as a host gift. Also as a gift for weddings, milestone birthdays, or anniversaries for people who appreciate silverware.
