What an Etrog Is

A citrus fruit that is held together with three types of branches during Sukkot. It must be undamaged—especially the small dried blossom scar at its tip, the pitam, must not break off. Therefore, the etrog is stored cushioned, not simply set down. The box provides support and shape for this cushioning.

The Difference from its Octagonal Sister

The manufacturer produces this container in two basic shapes. The octagonal box is taller, more angular, and lighter at 795 grams; its facets give it a stern silhouette. This one is flatter, wider, and significantly heavier—the dome of the lid replaces the height, and the curved side edges remove the sternness.

Those who see both side by side usually decide quickly: it's about angular versus round, not better versus worse.

Why the Lid is So Highly Domed

A flat lid would require less material and be easier to hammer. The dome has two reasons. Internally, it creates space above the fruit, so the cushioning is not compressed. Externally, it is the surface on which the ornament unfolds its effect—a relief on a curved surface casts different shadows with every incidence of light than the same relief on a flat one.

Material

At 985 grams for this size, the wall is considerably thicker than that of a usual lidded box—and this is a prerequisite, not an addition: the ornament is chased so deeply that thinner material would break through at the high points. It would not be possible to produce it on a press; it would tear under the punch. The Italian hallmark of the manufactory identifies the material.

Eleven Months of the Year

Sukkot lasts seven days in autumn. The rest of the year, the box stands empty, and most households then use it for what it outwardly already is: a lidded box for pastries, sweets, or jewelry. At this size, it offers ample space for that.

Care

Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use a dishwasher. Before storing, the inside must be completely dry—residual moisture in a closed silver vessel will tarnish it from the inside, and a polishing cloth cannot reach there. For storage, place the lid slightly askew. For deeply chased ornaments, use a soft brush; the darker depth can remain in the indentations, as it makes the relief more sculptural.
