Description

The manufacturer lists this piece under the same model number as the Eliyahu Cup with Nodus – it is its associated base plate. However, the catalog simply calls it a Square Plate, and that's no contradiction: without inscription and without a religious symbol, it can also hold cheese, pastries, or chocolates.

At a Glance

  • Square serving plate made of 925 sterling silver
  • Dimensions approx. 24 × 24 cm
  • Four sculptural corner volutes made of acanthus leaves
  • Continuous beaded border as an inner frame to the mirror
  • Densely chased rim between the edge and the mirror
  • Smooth square mirror with rounded corners
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufacturer since 1948

The Corners Shape It

With square silverware, the corner is the tricky spot: that's where ornament meets ornament, and where the transition fails, the whole piece looks cramped. This plate solves it by making the corner the main motif. From each corner grows a volute — a scrolled acanthus shape — that protrudes beyond the straight edge and gives the contour a swing.

Between the corners lies the rim with dense tendrils. Towards the mirror, a fine beaded border, a continuous band of small hemispheres, frames it. It is more than just ornamentation: the row of beads draws a clear line between the busy and calm zones and makes the smooth mirror appear larger than it is.

The work is hand chased — driven into the silver with punches, stroke by stroke. No two sections of tendrils are exactly alike; this is what distinguishes handmade work from stamping.

Material and Origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced in this way — the plating would crack under the punch. And it cannot be re-polished indefinitely because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcraft during creation and the care over generations. The Italian hallmark of the manufacturer certifies it.

Zaramella Argenti has been working in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased signature of the house and includes plates, trays, dishes, and vases in the same design language.

The Format for the Small Occasion

Approx. 24 × 24 cm is the measure for the individual rather than the quantity: chocolates with espresso, petits fours, a selection of cheese for two, the amuse-bouche. On the dining table, the plate stands as an independent element next to the place setting, not as a base for everything.

Outside the table, it is one of the few silver forms that also work on a desk — for seals, cufflinks, a watch overnight. On the dresser in the entrance, it holds keys and mail.

Also as Eliyahu Plate

Zaramella also offers the same plate as a dish for the Cup of Elijah — the fifth cup that is filled but not drunk at the Passover Seder. The plate sits under the cup, catching anything that overflows when pouring to the brim, and elevates it from the set table.

This is not a contradiction, but the rule for silverware: the form is the same, the use determines. Those looking for the plate for the Seder evening will also find it with partially gilded corner leaves in the Judaica from 925 Silver category.

Engraving

The mirror is square, flat, and free of ornamentation — an ideal surface for a monogram, because the square naturally provides a stable base for a centered initial. Engraving upon request; we will agree on size and position in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilverVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, currently free of charge.

Occasions

As a wedding gift, if it is to be a piece that remains visible daily instead of standing in a cupboard. For moving in, for a birthday, as a thank you. For someone who already has everything, a small silver plate is often a better choice than a large piece: it finds its place.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher — cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased depressions. Tarnishing is a reaction with sulfur from the air and is reversible with a silver cloth. In the tendrils and around the beaded border, the darker depth can remain — it gives the ornament its plasticity. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silverware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I serve food directly on it?

Yes, 925 silver is suitable for food contact. For acidic foods, we recommend an interlayer of paper and prompt cleaning afterwards.

How big is the smooth mirror?

It occupies the central area within the beaded border — enough for a centered monogram or a short dedication.

Solid or silver-plated?

Solid 925 sterling silver, no plating, with official Italian hallmark.

Does it belong to a cup?

Yes — the manufacturer lists it under the same model number as the Eliyahu Cup with Nodus. Both together are available as a set. As a serving plate, it can be used equally well without a cup.

Does it come in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.

Two Uses, One Piece

The manufacturer lists this plate under the same model number as the Eliyahu Cup with Nodus — it is its associated base plate, and both together make up the set.

At the same time, the catalog simply calls it a Square Plate, not a ritual plate. This is not a contradiction, but a statement about the form: without inscription and without a religious symbol, it is a square silver plate that can hold cheese, pastries, or chocolates.

Those who want it as a ritual plate will find the same form with gold accents in its gilded sibling — the plate measuring approx. 24×24 cm. Those looking for a pure serving plate can look in Table Silverware.
