Some families desire a calmer, more understated look for a sacred baptismal gift than bright colors or gilding can offer. This baptismal spoon made of 925 sterling silver features the image of Saint Matrona of Moscow in blackened silverwork – simple, serious, and with the depth inherent in this technique. A christening keepsake that will remain in the family.

Material and Craftsmanship
The saint's relief is blackened through a targeted oxidation process that emphasizes the fine indentations of the motif, while the surrounding silver remains polished. Unlike a lacquer finish, this blackening is firmly anchored in the silver and does not wear off. The handle features Orthodox ornamental patterns, and the bowl is smoothly polished. The spoon is crafted by Argenta from genuine 925 sterling silver with an official hallmark. Weighing approximately 27 g, it feels pleasant in the hand.
Usage and Occasions
This spoon is primarily presented at Orthodox baptisms, often by godparents or grandparents, and is also suitable for births or Orthodox holidays. Saint Matrona of Moscow (1881–1952) is considered one of Russia's most revered saints and a patroness for children, the sick, and people in difficult life situations. For families who appreciate Orthodox tradition in a more understated, less opulent form, the blackened version is a suitable choice alongside the enameled and gilded designs.
Engraving and SilverVerse Card
An engraving with a name, baptism date, or a short dedication is possible upon request – please contact our engraving service. Upon request, we also include a personalized SilverVerse card in photo format (15×10 cm landscape format) – individually designed, suitable for the occasion, and currently free of charge, available with or without engraving.
Care
Clean the spoon only by hand with lukewarm water and mild dish soap, then dry immediately and occasionally polish with a silver polishing cloth. Do not use a dishwasher – heat and detergents are too aggressive for the blackened surface. The blackening itself remains permanently intact. Store the spoon dry in the included gift box.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Saint Matrona of Moscow?
She was born blind but developed extraordinary spiritual abilities as a child and was canonized in 1999. Today, she is considered the patroness of the sick, children, and pregnant women.
Why blackened instead of gilded or enameled?
The blackening has a more understated, antique character compared to the festive gilding or colored enamel variants. We carry all three versions side by side in our assortment.
Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes, upon request. Short names, the baptism date, or a small dedication on the handle are possible.
