Material and Workmanship

The cat's head is depicted front-facing and alert, with pointed ears, a direct gaze, and fine niello lines on the forehead, cheeks, and chin that trace the fur's texture. The acanthus volute base below gives the motif a heraldic, dignified weight – not a playful kitten, but a cat with character. Niello is one of the oldest silversmithing techniques: The dark mass does not lie on the surface but is melted into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded with the silver – like ink that goes under the skin of the metal. The eye area deliberately remains bright silver and provides the contrast that gives the relief its depth. The wall relief is manufactured by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a center of Russian niello art with a tradition documented as far back as 1683.
