Culturally, the cat is one of the oldest revered animals: in Egypt as the sacred Bastet, in ancient Rome as a symbol of freedom (the only animal depiction on the Roman symbol of liberty), in Japanese households as a Maneki-neko good luck charm, in European literature as a mysterious companion from "The Black Cat" to Murr the cat. In almost every culture, the cat stands for independence, intuition, and a mystery that cannot be fully unveiled.

Nielloa is our brand for the handcrafted niello artworks from the SevChern manufactory. Niello itself is one of the oldest silversmithing techniques, extremely rare in Europe. Imagine it like ink in silver – or like a tattoo on the skin: the dark mass is not on top, but is melted into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded to the metal.

For the cat, the niello is exactly where it is supposed to create fur texture: in the fine forehead lines, in the cheek hatching, at the base of the whiskers. The eyes remain bright silver and attract attention – they are the center of the motif. Without niello, it would be an engraving. With niello, the cat gains depth and fur character – the 3D effect arises precisely from this contrast between the bright silver of the facial surfaces and the dark fur lines.

Hand Engraving and Master's Signature

With niello hand engraving, each stroke has only one chance. If a line is not placed correctly, the master starts over – no software undo button, no readjustment possible. Especially with an animal motif like the cat, this is delicate: a misplaced stroke in the muzzle area completely changes the expression – a calm cat becomes aggressive, a watchful one becomes sleepy.

The masters in Veliky Ustyug are trained according to the same principle and produce the same motif, but small differences in the line work are like human handwriting: they can be imitated, but the fine peculiarities remain. These peculiarities are the artist's signature.

The exact recipe of the niello mass and the individual way of working it over an open flame are the personal secret of each master. After melting, polishing follows: not too much removal (otherwise the niello disappears), not too little (otherwise the contrast is missing). Clean the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth – no abrasive cleaners, no direct water. The niello becomes more contrasting with each polish because the surrounding silver becomes brighter and the dark fur lines stand out more strongly. The dark brown wooden frame remains stable without special care, as long as it is not hung in a damp environment.

No. Nielloa is our brand for the handcrafted niello artworks from the SevChern manufactory. Niello is the technique (dark alloy melted into engraved silver lines), Nielloa is the name of our artwork line. From 2026, we plan to have our own shop at niello.de for this.

Is the cat a zodiac sign?
In the Chinese zodiac, the rabbit is the third sign, not the cat – however, in the Vietnamese calendar, the cat is featured at this position. We consciously assign the cat to the FAUNA line, not the ZODIAC line, because it is suitable for all cat lovers, regardless of their birth year. If you are specifically looking for a Vietnamese zodiac sign, please ask us directly.

Is this real niello or just blackened silver?
Real niello. At SevChern, there is a clear rule: either pure silver hand engraving or genuine niello inlay – never artificial oxidation. For this cat, the fur lines are genuine niello mass, melted over an open flame and permanently bonded to the silver.

Can I give the cat as a memorial gift for a deceased cat?
Yes, this is one of the most frequent orders for this motif. Upon request, we engrave the cat's name and years (birth to farewell) on the back. This turns the wall art into a personal legacy – not an object of mourning, but a dignified remembrance.

Is the motif more "male cat" or "female cat" – can the gender be recognized?
