Material and Workmanship

The core of the Inspiration series is the floral niello ornamental band on the saucers: a continuous pattern of flower rosettes and tendrils, which has been worked into fine engraving lines and filled with dark niello alloy. Niello is not paint or lacquer — it is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is burned into the silver at over 800 degrees and insoluble combines with the base metal. It does not fade. The gilded handles of the cups and the gilded spoon handles set warm accents against the polished silver and the dark niello — three values in one set: cold, warm, dark.

925 silver is durable if treated correctly. For niello silver: hand wash with warm water and mild detergent, no dishwasher. You should avoid a silver dip bath, as the niello inlays would be damaged. A soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient for polishing the smooth surfaces; do not aggressively work the niello ornaments themselves. Storage in the gift box or a closed case protects against tarnishing. Niello does not weaken with time, but deepens — the contrasts between polished silver and dark ornament gain with each year.
