Material and workmanship

The double-headed eagle has been one of the oldest symbols of Russian state heraldry since the late 15th century. On the "Sovereign" sugar box, it sits in a circular, gilded medallion on both sides of the bowl – the contour is engraved, the background gilded, so that the eagle stands out in relief. Gilded acanthus tendrils run around the medallions with a braided border below the rim. Niello is a dark metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into the engraved depressions and chemically binds with the silver – permanent, not applied. The two C-shaped handles are fully gilded, with four ball knobs at the attachments. The bowl is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a manufactory with a tradition dating back to 1683.

The bowl is designed as an open sugar bowl – for sugar cubes, granulated sugar, and rock candy. The volume of 220 ml and the wide shape also make it suitable for confectionery or small chocolates. Niello hardly changes; the contrasts between dark niello and polished silver even deepen with regular polishing. Do not clean the gilded interior with hard or abrasive agents – warm water and a mild detergent are sufficient for thorough cleaning.
