Material and Workmanship

Since the late 15th century, the double-headed eagle has been one of the oldest symbols of Russian state heraldry. On the "Sovereign" sugar bowl, it is set in a circular, gilded medallion on both sides of the bowl – the outline is engraved, and the background is gilded, so the eagle stands out in relief. Gilded acanthus tendrils run around the medallions with a braided band border below the rim. Niello is a dark metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into the engraved indentations and chemically bonds with the silver – permanently, not applied. The two C-shaped handles are fully gilded, with four spherical knobs at their bases. The bowl is made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where the niello tradition has been documented since 1683.

Niello changes little; the contrasts between dark niello and polished silver even deepen with regular polishing. Do not clean the gilded interior with harsh or abrasive agents – warm water and mild dish soap are sufficient for thorough cleaning.
