Description
This 925 sterling silver baby spoon combines gold plating and the niello technique: On the softly shimmering, gold-plated handle, a hare merrily playing a drum appears in fine dark niello lines. It makes a lovely gift for a birth, christening or first birthday. The hare symbolizes joie de vivre, fertility and new beginnings.

- Finishing: Niello motif on a gold-plated background, hand-engraved and filled with black niello inlay
- Motif: Hare with drum
- Length: approx. 10 cm
- Weight: approx. 12 g
- Collection: Niello silver (Russian engraving and niello tradition)
Materials and craftsmanship
Niello is a black inlay fused into engraved lines, then ground flush and polished—like ink in silver. This creates a high-contrast image against the gold-plated background. The process begins with engraving the motif, followed by heating the niello compound, applying it to the recesses, smoothing and polishing it. Only then are the remaining surfaces gold-plated. The motif shows a hare with alert, upright ears, playing a drum with evident delight—the dark niello lines stand out strikingly against the warm gold.
Occasions and recipients
For a birth, as a first silver gift that brings a rare art form into a child’s life—the hare symbolizes new beginnings. For a christening, for godparents seeking a gift with substance and history. For a first birthday, as a keepsake that retains its value over the years. For grandparents and collectors who appreciate tradition and the rarity of the niello technique.
SilberVerse card
The niello decoration covers the handle completely, so adding an engraving afterward is not possible without damaging the motif. As a personal touch, we offer a free, digitally designed SilberVerse card in photo format, 15 × 10 cm (landscape).
Care
After use, hand-wash with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, silver dip or chemical cleaners, as these may damage the niello inlay. Over time, the niello inlay may develop an even deeper color—this is not a flaw, but a sign of authenticity. Not dishwasher-safe.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is niello, and why is it so rare?
Niello is one of the oldest decorative techniques for silver. A black inlay is fused into engraved designs, ground flush and polished, becoming part of the metal itself—it cannot peel or fade. The technique has all but disappeared in Europe.
Can this spoon be engraved?
No. The niello decoration covers the handle completely, and engraving it afterward would damage the motif.
Can the gold plating wear off?
With normal handling and proper care, the gold plating lasts for decades.
