Description
Baby rattle 925 silver angel — stem shape with ornamented handle and engraving field
This baby rattle, crafted from 925 sterling silver, features an angel as its head—a chubby-cheeked child's face with curly hair and two outstretched, intricately feathered wings that unfold to either side. It is a cherub in the style of the Italian Renaissance—a celestial being with a gentle gaze and a grace reminiscent of Raphael's angels. The stem is adorned with elaborate Baroque decoration: a diamond pattern at the top, flowing tendrils and floral motifs in the center, and a large, smooth oval engraving area at the bottom—space for a personal dedication. A small loop at the end of the stem allows for the attachment of a ribbon or pacifier chain. Made by Zaramella Argenti —an Italian silversmith from Padua that has been producing solid sterling silver with a mirror-polished finish since 1948 and manufactures for, among others, the French luxury house Christofle. A silver guardian angel—in your baby's hand.

Zaramella Argenti — Italian silver art since 1948
This baby rattle comes from the Zaramella Argenti manufactory in Padua, northern Italy. Since 1948, the Zaramella family has been crafting solid sterling silver in a tradition rooted in Venetian silversmithing. The angel rattle is the most intricate figurative piece in the stem-shaped rattle range—because no other motif demands as much detailed work as an angel's face with wings.
- Portrait-like figure work: The angel's face is not an abstract silhouette, but a veritable miniature portrait. The round cheeks, the gentle eyes, the small nose, and the suggested mouth—every feature is individually modeled. Added to this is the curly hair that frames the head like a halo. This level of detail on such a small surface requires masterful skill.
- Feathered wings: The two wings are the centerpiece of the figure. Each individual feather is carved in relief – from the small coverts at the base of the wings to the long flight feathers at the tips. The wings are slightly curved forward, as if the angel were bending protectively over the child.
- Invisible solder joints: Where the angel's head with its expansive wings meets the decorated stem, no seam is visible — a remarkable achievement for such a complex, asymmetrical shape.
- Hallmark “30PD Z 925”: Each piece bears the official Zaramella hallmark — a verifiable mark of authenticity that guarantees 92.5% pure silver.
The angel as a rattle head — form and detail
The angel on this rattle is a cherub —a winged child's face, as depicted in European art since the Renaissance. Raphael's famous angel figures in the Sistine Madonna, thoughtfully resting their chins on their hands, are the most well-known example of this type. Zaramella has translated this tradition into silver: A rounded child's face with large, gentle eyes gazes at the viewer. The curly hair falls to the sides and blends seamlessly into the wings. The wings themselves spread out to both sides—feathered, detailed, with a wingspan that makes the rattle's head wider than any other figure in the collection.
Inside the figure are small silver balls that, when shaken, produce a soft, light rattle—quiet enough for delicate baby ears, but distinct enough to capture attention. The outstretched wings offer tactile anchor points: little fingers can feel the individual feathers, sense the difference between the smooth cheeks and the textured plumage, and explore the curls of the hair.
The ornamented stem — Baroque decor with engraving field
The stem of the angel rattle is elaborately designed and divided into three zones. At the top, directly below the angel's head, is a small diamond ornament —a geometric element that marks the transition from figure to stem. In the middle of the stem , curved leaves and floral Baroque ornaments twine—a vibrant decoration that makes the stem appear three-dimensional and elegant.
The lower part of the handle opens into a large, smooth oval area —the engraving area. It is significantly larger than the engraving areas on the spherical rattles and provides space for a short personal inscription. The ornamentation continues at the very bottom of the handle, culminating in a decorative point to which a small eyelet is attached.
Engraving available upon request — name, baptismal date or blessing.
The large, smooth engraving area on the ornamented stem is suitable for short personal engravings :
- Baptism date — the most common engraving motif for the angel rattle
- Child's name — a short first name fits ideally on the oval field
- Initials — e.g. “LM” or “AS”
- Monogram — intertwined letters as a family symbol
- A short blessing — e.g., “God protect you”

The angel as a gift — what it represents
The angel is one of the most profound symbols one can give a newborn. It represents protection, divine guidance, and unconditional love . The belief in guardian angels is deeply rooted in almost all cultures—the idea that every child is accompanied by an invisible guardian who watches over them as they sleep and guides them through life.
Giving an angel as a christening gift has a particularly strong tradition. Baptism is the moment when a child is placed under the protection of a higher power—the angel makes this protection visible and tangible. Giving a child an angel is a way of saying: May an angel protect you wherever you go. It is a blessing in silver—lasting, tangible, and always near.
The cherub shape of this rattle connects the concept of guardian angels with the art of the Italian Renaissance. The putti and cherubim in the paintings of Raphael, Botticelli, and Michelangelo embody a heavenly innocence that perfectly suits a newborn—a child who is itself like a little angel. The Zaramella manufactory in Padua, in the heart of Northern Italy, has this artistic tradition right on its doorstep.
Use and development
From birth, the baby rattle serves as a grasping and auditory object . The angel shape is wider than most other rattle heads—the spread wings give the head a wingspan that little hands can grasp from either side. Weighing approximately 25 grams, the rattle produces a clear, satisfying sound when shaken. From about 3–4 months, babies begin to shake the rattle themselves. The angel figure offers a particularly rich tactile experience: the smooth cheeks, the curly hair, the individual feathers of the wings, and the ornaments on the stem create a landscape of shapes and textures.
Note on cooling: 925 sterling silver has natural antibacterial properties. During teething, the rattle can be briefly stored in the refrigerator (not the freezer) — the cool silver has a soothing effect on irritated gums.

Care
Clean the baby rattle after use with warm water and mild dish soap. Dry with a soft cloth. For light patina, a silver polishing cloth is sufficient; a soft brush can be helpful for the fine grooves of the wings and the ornaments on the handle. Do not use harsh cleaning agents or abrasives. Not dishwasher safe. The included Zaramella gift box is suitable for storage.
Frequently asked questions about the baby rattle angel
Why is an angel the ideal christening gift?
Baptism places a child under divine protection—the angel makes this protection visible and tangible. Engraved with the baptismal date, the rattle becomes a silver baptismal certificate. This Renaissance cherub from the Zaramella manufactory combines this concept of protection with the artistic tradition of Northern Italy.
Can the rattle be engraved?
Yes — short engravings are possible on the large, smooth oval area of the ornamented stem. Suitable for a name, baptism date, initials, monogram, or a short blessing. Available exclusively upon request — contact us via our engraving service .
How heavy is the rattle and how long is it?
The rattle is approximately 14 cm long and weighs approximately 25 g. The spread wings make the rattle head wider than with other designs — providing a good grip for small hands.
From what age is the rattle suitable?
Suitable from birth as a grasping and listening object. The wings offer lateral gripping points, and the feathered surface provides plenty of tactile variety. From about 3-4 months, babies begin to shake the rattle themselves.
Is sterling silver safe for babies?
Yes. 925 sterling silver is food-safe, nickel-free, and has natural antibacterial properties. The rattle contains no loose small parts—the silver beads inside are securely enclosed.
