Veliky Ustyug niello art has been documented in writing since 1683 — Veliky Ustyug in the Vologda region became the reference center for this technique in the 17th and 18th centuries. Is the dish food-safe — can I put butter, cheese, or jam directly into it?
Yes, without restriction. Pure 925 sterling silver is approved for food contact, and the 24-carat gilding on the inner wall and base is also food-safe. Jam, cream cheese, some acidic cheeses, and other acidic foods are better kept on the gilded inner base than on bare silver, because gold is chemically more stable against acid. How do I clean the butter dish properly?
