Two horizontal niello bands with baroque cartouches and lotus blossoms wrap around the silver body, sealed with a stopper lid topped with a silver knob. Two horizontal niello bands run along the body of the decanter, precisely placed and symmetrically aligned. Between the friezes, lotus blossoms and cartouches alternate—a classic composition drawing from 18th-century European silversmithing, but given a depth by the niello technique that no printing or etching process can achieve. Without a handle, the decanter is particularly elegant to hold and pour: you slowly tilt it, the stopper is ready, and the contents flow smoothly from the neck.

Material and Workmanship

Niello is not a color, not a lacquer, not a coating. It is a dark alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions where it forms a chemical-physical bond with the silver. The motif becomes part of the metal—not applied, but inscribed. In the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, each piece undergoes up to 15 individual processes before it leaves the workshop. The bright sterling silver and the almost black niello drawing create a contrast that deepens with polishing—the decanter becomes more beautiful with age. Each finished piece bears the SevChern manufactory mark and the 925 hallmark, which confirms the silver's fineness.

Care

A soft cloth, lukewarm water—that's all the decanter needs. No silver dip, as this can attack the niello inlay. Not dishwasher safe. The stopper should be cleaned separately and stored dry.

This is a deliberate design choice. The Classique decanter is designed as a spirit bottle—you hold it by the belly and neck, just like a bottle of fine cognac. This gives it elegance when pouring.
