Material and craftsmanship

Niello is neither paint nor lacquer, but a fused sulfur alloy that bonds permanently with the engraved silver through a chemical and physical process—often aptly described as “ink in silver.” The floral ornament on this dessert fork’s handle is created using fine intaglio engraving before the black compound is applied and polished. This technique does not fade or wear away, and its depth does not change over time—on the contrary, each polish deepens the contrast between silver and black even further. This makes niello silver one of the few types of silverware that still looks as it did on the first day, even after decades. The floral ornamentation runs as a continuous design theme throughout the Astra family—forks, knives, spoons, and serving pieces all share the same flowing leaf-and-vine motif.

Use and occasions

Silver cutlery is not a gift for everyday use—it is a gift for moments that last. This Astra Black dessert fork is perfect for weddings, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and housewarmings. Arriving in the included gift box, it needs no additional wrapping. Whether you buy individual pieces or add to the collection over time, every Astra Black fork goes with every other Astra piece and can be easily combined with spoons, knives, and serving cutlery from the same collection.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

A classic engraving is only possible to a limited extent due to the niello ornament. If you add the engraving service to your cart, we will check the piece after your order to see which areas are suitable and refund the flat fee if none are. As a personal message, we recommend our SilberVerse card as an alternative: a custom-designed card in 15 × 10 cm photo format, free of charge and tailored entirely to the occasion, recipient, and sender.

Care

The best way to care for niello silver is with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products and the dishwasher—not because the silver is delicate, but because harsh cleaners can dull the niello ornament. With proper care, the contrast between silver and niello will last for generations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fork made of?
Entirely of 925 sterling silver—the handle and tines. The niello ornament on the handle is fused in place and permanently bonded.

Does it match other Astra pieces?
Yes. The Astra Black dessert fork is stylistically identical to other pieces in the collection and can be added to at any time.

Can I add an engraving?
A classic engraving is only possible to a limited extent due to the niello ornament. You can still order the engraving service at the same time—we will check the piece afterward, and if engraving is not possible, we will refund the flat fee. Alternatively, we recommend our free SilberVerse card as a personal message.
