The Niello Pattern on the Rim — Floral Tendril Border of the Hunting Collection

The rim of this plate features a dense floral tendril pattern in niello hand engraving: leaves, small blossoms, winding stems, and symmetrical volutes run all around the edge. Between the ornaments, geometric interim lines create clear structural levels. The contrast between deep black niello and bright, highly polished silver makes the pattern legible from any distance. The floral border is one of the most traditional ornaments in Russian silversmithing — it evokes a forest aesthetic without explicitly depicting an animal. Niello — Russian Silversmithing from Veliky Ustyug

Niello is a blackening alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur. At over 800 degrees Celsius, it is melted into the hand-engraved depressions and permanently bonded with the silver. The black sits INSIDE the metal — no application, no coating, nothing that can come off. The technique has been cultivated in Veliky Ustyug since 1683 and is geographically protected like Champagne. SevChern is one of the few workshops worldwide that still performs traditional niello hand engraving. In 1937, the manufactory received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris for this. Each plate bears the artist's manufactory mark, registered annually with the Russian Federal Assay Office.

Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap. No dishwasher. No silver dip — the niello inlay would be damaged. Use a soft cloth for the polished mirror, and a silver polishing cloth for light patina if needed. Storage in the gift box or protected from light prevents tarnishing.
