Description

At Zaramella, "Light" does not mean less silver, but less ornamentation: the upper half of the cup remains smooth and polished. For those looking for a goblet that also looks good all year round — in a display cabinet or on a sideboard — this is the more serene choice. The smooth surface reflects light rather than refracting it.

At a glance

  • Eliyahu goblet made of 925 sterling silver, Light version
  • Height approx. 28 cm — silver weight approx. 0.5 kg
  • Upper half of the cup polished, lower third chased
  • Baluster stem on a stepped circular base
  • Gold-plated interior
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948

What "Light" means

The Signature line is known for dense chasing. This version deliberately takes a different approach: the ornament only begins below the middle, while the upper half of the cup remains polished.

This is not a cost-saving measure, but a design decision. A polished silver surface reflects light as a single plane — by candlelight, and the Seder night takes place in the evening, it reflects the table and the people around it. A fully chased goblet, by contrast, refracts light into many small reflections.

Anyone who sees both versions side by side will notice: the dense version works from close up, while the Light variant works across the length of a table.

The clear surface as an engraving area

The polished zone offers a practical advantage. With fully chased goblets, only the base rim remains for engraving. Here, half the cup is available — enough for a name, a date, a line in Hebrew, or a family crest, clearly legible and at eye level.

For a goblet intended as a gift and passed down through generations, this is often the deciding factor.

The fifth cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which people drink. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet whose coming announces the future redemption; at one point during the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.

Because it does not need to be held in the hand, it is large. Approx. 28 cm is the height that stands out above the rest of the tableware and remains visible from every seat at the table.

Material and origin

The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated ware is twofold with a goblet: chasing only works in solid silver — a plating would tear during hammering — and the interior gilding protects exactly where you cannot polish. A goblet that is filled for decades needs both.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased — driven into the silver by hand using punches.

As a gift

For a wedding, when a household hosts a Seder for the first time itself. As a gift for the hosts. For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

A goblet with an engraving area is particularly suitable for occasions that are to be dated — it bears the year visibly, and later generations can add to it below.

Engraving

The polished upper cup is the designated area. Because it is curved, we discuss the size and line arrangement in advance — an engraving looks different on a curve than on a flat surface. Upon request, we include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside. No dishwasher. Rinse quickly after the Seder so that no wine dries on it. The polished zone shows fingerprints more clearly than a chased one; a soft cloth is sufficient. Tarnish can be removed with a silver cloth; the darker depth may remain in the recesses. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.

Frequently asked questions

How does "Light" differ from the standard version?

The upper half of the cup remains polished instead of chased. This appears more serene, reflects candlelight as a surface, and offers a large area for engraving.

Is there a matching plate?

Yes — the Light plate approx. 23 cm belongs to this goblet. There is no pre-bundled set for this size category; as a set, we carry the next larger Light set.

Can one drink from the goblet?

Technically yes — it is made of 925 silver and gold-plated inside. However, in the ritual, the cup of Eliyahu remains undrunk.

Is the goblet kosher?

We carry silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide a ruling under religious law. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your congregation.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.

What "Light" means in this line

Zaramella carries the Signature goblets in two versions. The Light variant has the same silhouette but a calmer surface: the chasing is concentrated on the base and upper rim, while the middle of the cup remains largely smooth. This makes the piece lighter — in weight as well as in appearance.

The corresponding Light plate approx. 23 cm is crafted accordingly. One size larger is the Light goblet approx. 30 cm, which is also available together with its plate as a ready-made set.

Those looking for full chasing should compare it with the fully chased goblet of the same height. Both are part of the same line — the decision is a matter of taste, not quality.

And during the eleven months in between? A goblet of this height does not belong in a cupboard. On a sideboard or in a display cabinet, it stands as an object — the smooth cup of the Light version reflects the room's light, which makes it appear more advantageous than densely chased pieces.
