Each of the three tiers is crafted from solid 925 sterling silver and features an ornament along the rim that is hand-engraved and filled with Niello – that black silver-sulfur alloy that chemically bonds with the silver and thus never peels off like lacquer. The combination of dark Niello and gold on highly polished silver represents the Veliky Ustyug Niello tradition, whose first written mention dates back to 1683 – a craftsmanship still practiced in Veliky Ustyug today.
