Material and Workmanship

Both cups are made of 925 sterling silver and feature the same niello engraving: stylized turtle dove volutes, embedded in floral acanthus ornaments, hand-engraved in line relief. The dark contour is created by niello — a silver-copper-sulfur alloy that is melted into the engraved lines over an open flame and then inseparably bonded with the silver. Unlike many SevChern pieces, this set deliberately foregoes gilding: the contrast comes solely from the polished silver against the deep black niello, a more purist, modern look than gilded variants. An oval medallion in the center of each cup is intentionally left empty — as a surface for engraving. The cups are produced in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where the niello tradition has been documented since 1683.
