The Hummingbird — Motif & Meaning
The hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world and at the same time one of the most striking: its plumage shimmers in green and gold depending on the light, its wings beat up to 80 times per second. It stands for lightness, energy, and joy in the moment — qualities that are reflected in the enamel holder. Green enamel surfaces, golden accents, a relief pattern that plays with the light.
The motif connects the cup and the holder: The porcelain cup features the hummingbird as a porcelain painting, while the holder continues it in three-dimensional enamel work. No sticker, no transfer print — the image is in the material.
Imperial Porcelain — the cup since 1744
The Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg was founded in 1744 — at the behest of Empress Elizabeth. It is Russia's oldest porcelain manufactory and represents what defines luxury porcelain: thin walls, precise shapes, hand-painted decoration. On the bottom of the cup, you'll find the manufactory stamp — a mark of quality that has remained unchanged for almost three centuries.
Russkiye Samotsvety — the holder made of silver & enamel
The cup holder is created in three artisanal steps at Russkiye Samotsvety in St. Petersburg:
- Electroforming — Silver is built up on a wax model in an electroplating bath, and the wax is then removed. Result: a three-dimensional silver object with a fine surface, lighter than cast silver.
- Enamel Filigree Technique — Fine twisted silver wires form the relief pattern. Along these contours, enamel is applied by hand and painted with glaze. The hand of the artisan determines the result — no two pieces are identical.
- Gilding — A wafer-thin layer of gold (micron range) is applied: for shine, for protection, for warm accents.
Holder weight approx. 48 g — of which approx. 24 g silver, approx. 32 g copper as a carrier structure. Total weight with cup approx. 98 g.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the hummingbird on the cup symbolize?
The hummingbird stands for lightness, energy, and joy in the moment. The motif was implemented by Russkiye Samotsvety using the enamel filigree technique — green and gold, built up in layers and hand-painted. The hummingbird on the porcelain cup and the one on the holder form a continuous image.
Is the cup suitable for daily use?
Yes — the porcelain and silver holder are functional. For daily use, we recommend hand washing and no silver dip. Many people use the cup daily and display it in a showcase after use.
Which manufacturers are behind it?
The porcelain cup comes from Imperial Porcelain (St. Petersburg, since 1744), and the silver enamel holder from Russkiye Samotsvety (St. Petersburg, since 1912). Both parts bear the manufactory stamp. The combination of two historical houses is what makes this object special.
Is the cup available with other motifs?
Yes — Russkiye Samotsvety produces various motifs using the enamel filigree technique. In our shop, you'll find more coffee and tea cups made of 925 silver with different motifs, including the Firebird.
