Fourteen flames — what that means

With this design, an even number means: no central nozzle. The arms are distributed in pairs around the stem, which terminates at the top in a crown instead of a candle nozzle. In the thirteen-flame version, it is the other way around — there, a nozzle sits above the center.

For the visual appearance, this matters more than the one candle might suggest: A candelabra without a center nozzle looks broader and calmer in silhouette, while one with a center nozzle looks sharper and more aspirational.

A piece for rooms, not tables

Fourteen burning candles in an area of less than a meter — that is an amount of light that carries a medium-sized room. Historically, such pieces did not stand on the dining table, but on consoles and sideboards along the walls, where they illuminated the room while lower candlesticks stood on the table.

Those who recreate this arrangement come closest to the original effect: light from the sides and from above, with little directly on the table. For the table itself, single-armed candlesticks in staggered heights are more suitable.

Within the series

At the same height of approx. 65 cm, this model family also includes the thirteen-flame version weighing approx. 7.7 kg. We will add configurations with ten and eleven flames as soon as reliable product images are available.

The alternative with a round base is the other series in the line: nine, eleven or twelve flames at approx. 66 cm.

The base

Four-lobed and curved, with four scroll feet at the corners. A piece with a wide-reaching wreath needs support points on the outside, not in the middle — four feet provide more stable support than a continuous ring, especially on a tablecloth or uneven wood.

The four straight panels between the curves are also the best engraving surface of all the candelabras in the line, because a dedication can run straight there.

Between occasions

Such pieces are lit on only a few evenings a year. The rest of the time, they just stand there — and are made for it. In front of a light-colored wall, the staggered wreath creates a silhouette one would not expect from a candlestick.

Practical tip: With fourteen arms in multiple tiers, dust collects in the spaces. A soft brush once a month keeps the piece clean without ever needing a thorough disassembly.

Candles and wax

Taper candles of standard thickness. Wax residues can be loosened after a brief cooling; never use a blade, as silver is softer than steel.

Engraving

Care

By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. Clean arms with a narrow cloth, base ornamentation with a soft brush. Is this a Hanukkiah?

No. Hanukkiyot have nine nozzles — eight at the same height, one elevated. They can be found under Judaica in 925 silver.
