The poppy

Among floral motifs in the silversmith's craft, the poppy is an unusual choice. Rose, acanthus, and lily are the standards; the poppy was introduced in the late 19th century when Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement sought forms that drape more softly than the rigid acanthus leaf.

It is particularly well-suited for this: the flower is bowl-shaped and catches the light, the bud is a closed sphere, and the leaves are finely pinnate. Three very different forms from a single plant—enough to articulate an entire stem without repetition.

The work is chased by hand: driven into the silver with punches. On a slender, tapering stem, this is the more difficult exercise because the motif must become narrower toward the top without appearing compressed.

The effect of continuous chasing

A candlestick with polished areas reflects the flame as a flat surface. This one has no such surface—it breaks the light into many small reflections. By candlelight, the surface flickers along with the flame rather than simply gleaming steadily.

This is the true difference from the quieter model of the same height. Those who place a pair on a set table will notice: the chased version appears more lively, the polished one more measured. Both are approx. 39.5 cm high and can be combined—they stem from the same basic form.

Material and origin

Massive silver leads to two things that can be seen immediately on a candlestick: chasing only succeeds in solid silver, because plating would tear under the punch. And silver reflects over 95 percent of visible light—more than any other functional metal. Before electrification, this was the exact reason why candlesticks were crafted from silver.

Due to the continuous chasing, there is no blank space on the stem. Care

Clean by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not put in the dishwasher. Wax residue is best removed by briefly cooling the candlestick—the wax can then be lifted off without scratching. Never use a knife. A soft brush is suitable for the indentations between the flowers. Tarnish is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker tint may remain in the depths—with continuous chasing, it is precisely this that makes the motif legible in the first place. This candlestick and the classic candlestick at approx. 39.5 cm share a model number with the manufacturer. Same height, same construction—the difference lies solely in the motif: here, a poppy pod decor runs over the base and stem.

The poppy pod is an old motif in tableware art. Its spherical, fluted form is particularly suitable for hammered silver because it breaks light into narrow strips—a visible effect by candlelight.
