Description
Polished surfaces remain between the ornamental zones — and they are the actual focus here. They reflect the candlelight as a smooth surface, while densely chased sections break it up into many small glints. Among the single-flame candlesticks in this line, this is the most understated one.
At a glance
- Single-flame candlestick made of 925 sterling silver
- Height approx. 39.5 cm — silver weight approx. 0.7 kg
- Chased socket, chased shaft base, and base
- Polished zones in between — ornament with pauses
- Domed base on four volute feet
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacturing since 1948
How a candlestick is constructed
Three parts define the form. The socket at the top holds the candle and usually supports a bobeche underneath. The shaft connects it to the base, which supports and weighs down the entire piece.
In this model, the distribution is classic: the socket and the base carry the ornament, while the shaft remains largely smooth. This has both an aesthetic and a practical reason. Aesthetically, the calm shaft leads the eye upwards to the flame; practically, one holds a candlestick by the shaft, and a smooth surface feels better in the hand than a sharply chased relief.
The ornaments are chased by hand — driven into the silver with punches, blow by blow. On the base, where the surface area is largest, the pattern is at its densest; it rests on four small curled volute feet that lift it off the table.
Why silver and candlelight belong together
Of all functional metals, silver has the highest reflectivity for visible light — over 95 percent. Before electrification, this was not a luxury, but a function: a silver candlestick threw the light of a single candle back into the room and made the evening brighter.
This effect remains. The polished zones of this candlestick reflect the flame as a calm surface, while the chased ones break it into many small reflections. Anyone who lights both candles of a pair will see the difference more clearly than in daylight.
Material and origin
Two things are immediately apparent from the solid silver: chasing is only possible in solid silver, as a plated layer would tear under the punch. And silver reflects over 95 percent of visible light — more than any other functional metal. Before electrification, this was precisely the reason why candlesticks were made of silver.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased signature of the house — this candlestick is its most understated representative among the single-flame models.
Single or as a pair
Candlesticks traditionally look best in pairs: to the left and right of a centerpiece, at the ends of a dining table, or flanking on a sideboard. Symmetry is half the effect.
It works on its own where it does not need to answer — on a side table, in a niche, next to a picture. At approx. 39.5 cm, it is tall enough to rise above a set table without blocking the view of the person opposite: the light comes from above, leaving the face unobstructed.
Engraving
The polished zones on the shaft and the smooth edge of the base can accommodate an engraving — a monogram, a date, or two initials for a pair. Because the surfaces are curved, we will discuss size and position in advance. Upon request, we will enclose a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Occasions
For a wedding — a pair of candlesticks is one of those gifts that will accompany a marriage for decades and be placed on the table at every celebration. For a silver wedding anniversary, a housewarming, or a milestone birthday. As a gift where two people can contribute one candlestick each.
Care
Clean by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not put in the dishwasher. Wax residues are best removed by placing the candlestick in a cool spot for a moment — the wax can then be lifted off without scratching. Never use a knife: silver is softer than steel. Tarnishing is a normal reaction to sulfur in the air and is reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth may remain in the chased indentations. More can be found in our guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently asked questions
Which candles fit?
Classic taper candles with a 22 mm diameter, the standard retail size. If the fit is slightly loose, a drop of wax in the socket helps.
Does the candlestick get hot?
Silver conducts heat well; the socket will become noticeably warm. The shaft remains lukewarm. Let it cool briefly before touching.
Is it available as a pair?
The manufacturer produces them individually — for a pair, the same item is ordered twice. Other candlesticks in the line include the poppy candlestick, the Mini, and the Maxi.
Solid or silver-plated?
Solid 925 sterling silver with a material weight of approx. 0.7 kg; not plated.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
The four candlesticks in the line
Signature includes four candlesticks that differ in height and motif:
- this one, approx. 39.5 cm — the classic version with a calm shaft
- the candlestick with poppy motif, approx. 39.5 cm — same model base, different decor
- the Mini, approx. 40 cm — built slimmer
- the Maxi, approx. 47 cm — with flared leaves
Candlesticks are traditionally purchased in pairs. On Shabbat, two candles are lit — for Zachor and Shamor, the remembering and observing of the day of rest. Anyone wishing for a pair should order the same item twice; the manufacturer produces them individually.
Further candlesticks outside this line can be found in the category 925 silver candlesticks.
