Children's gift set 925 silver Niello teddy bear

Three pieces, one motif, one origin: This children’s gift set consists of a child's plate, a handled cup, and a children's spoon, all made of 925 sterling silver and crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, each permanently decorated with niello. The cup features a teddy bear surrounded by floating hearts, the spoon is accented by an oval teddy bear portrait at the end of the handle, and the plate is encircled by a decorative band of hearts, zigzag triangles, and spiral tendrils. Anyone looking for a complete set for the nursery table, crafted by a single source, will find here three pieces that belong together.

Material and Craftsmanship

All three pieces are made of 925 sterling silver and carry their own niello motif. Niello is a black inlay that is melted into hand-engraved lines, sanded smooth, and polished—like ink in silver. It is not a print or sticker, but a fusion that becomes part of the metal itself, ensuring it neither fades nor peels. The set is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, one of the most significant centers for Russian silverwork, with a documented niello tradition dating back to 1683.

The set in detail

The child's plate is the deep dish in the set: with a diameter of 163 mm and a height of 38 mm, it holds 250 ml, perfect for baby food, soup, or cereal. The wide, flat rim bears the niello decorative band of hearts, zigzag triangles, and spiral tendrils, while the basin remains smoothly polished and easy to clean. The handled cup holds 125 ml—a suitable size for small children's hands—and is easy to hold thanks to its D-handle and pedestal base. It features the teddy bear surrounded by floating hearts of varying sizes, creating a warm, playful image. The 150 mm long children's spoon is proportioned for small hands and features an oval medallion at the end of the handle with a portrait of the teddy bear, as if it had just stepped out of the image on the cup.

Motif and Symbolism

The teddy bear with hearts is not merely a decorative motif; it speaks of comfort and the joy of giving. The hearts in the design connect the motif to the act of giving itself: a teddy bear surrounded by hearts on a set that is a gift in its own right. The decorative band on the plate picks up on the heart shape of the cup's motif without repeating it, complemented by the geometric zigzag pattern typical of classic niello ornamentation from Veliky Ustyug.

Occasions and Target Audience

A 925 silver children's tableware set with niello motifs is not an item that gets replaced after one season. It is one of the few gifts that accompanies a child from birth or baptism, first as daily tableware, later as a keepsake. For godparents and grandparents wishing to give a complete set from a single source, this collection is a harmonious choice. Those who prefer a gender-neutral motif will find an alternative in the same technique with the SevChern children's gift set featuring an owl motif.

Engraving and SilberVerse Card

Personalized engraving is possible upon review, such as a name, date, or short dedication on one or more pieces. An engraved set becomes uniquely tied to the child and the occasion. Optionally, you can complement the set with a SilberVerse card: custom-designed in 15 x 10 cm landscape photo format, available upon request.

Care

Clean all pieces by hand with warm water and mild dish soap; a soft cloth is sufficient. Do not use a dishwasher, aggressive cleaning agents, or silver dipping baths. A light layer of tarnish on the silver surface can be removed with a silver polishing cloth; the niello itself will not change in color or depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exactly which pieces are included in the set?
The set consists of a child's plate (163 mm diameter, 38 mm height, 250 ml, 228 g), a handled cup (68 mm diameter, 89 mm width with handle, 57 mm height, 125 ml, 95 g), and a children's spoon (150 mm long, 34.6 mm wide, 39 g). Does every piece have the same motif?

Are there similar sets from SevChern with other motifs?
Yes. The children's gift set with an owl motif is also crafted by SevChern using the same material and niello technique; the owl motif is gender-neutral and equally suitable for girls and boys.
