Material and Workmanship

The corkscrew is made of 925 sterling silver, i.e. 92.5% pure silver. The reclining tiger is sculpted three-dimensionally — mouth slightly open, paws individually discernible, the fur pattern as fine longitudinal lines across the entire body. Beneath it, the platform features acanthus and palmette ornamentation, as is usually found on classic tableware.

The recesses of the reliefs are antique patinated: a targeted oxidation that allows light and shadow to work and makes the relief stand out plastically. This is not niello work — niello is a different, independent Russian silversmithing technique using a melted-in black sulfur-silver paste. This is classic oxide patina. The raised areas can be carefully re-polished if necessary, while the recesses retain their depth.

It is 925 sterling silver, meaning solid pure silver with a silver content of 92.5%. Silver-plated corkscrews have a thin coating on a base metal core and therefore feel noticeably lighter — this piece is solid silver throughout.

Will the patina get lighter or darker over time?

Silver oxidizes very slowly in normal room air; when stored dry, the appearance remains stable for a long time. If the raised areas should appear lighter later, you can carefully re-polish them with a soft silver polishing cloth without affecting the depths of the patina.

Does the spiral work reliably even with older corks?

The spiral is classically shaped and reliably grips modern and medium-aged natural corks. For very old, brittle corks, a two-prong puller is generally the gentler choice.
