Description

Mother of God of the Seven Swords — Icon in 925 Silver, Niello, and Gilding

There are objects that transform a space. Not by their size — this icon measures 141 by 121 millimeters. Not by their volume. But by what they carry: a pictorial tradition spanning over 600 years, set in 230 grams of 925 sterling silver, hand-engraved, enameled with niello, and gilded. The Mother of God of the Seven Swords — one of the most emotional icon types in Orthodox Christianity. Seven swords pierce her heart. The symbolism is clear: it is the pain that sustains the world. The love that does not hide.

This icon is not a religious souvenir. It is a devotional object with weight — literally and figuratively. Crafted in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia, using the same techniques that Russian silversmiths have mastered since the 17th century. Whoever holds this holy image holds centuries of craftsmanship in their hands.

The Motif — Mother of God of the Seven Swords

The Mother of God of the Seven Swords is one of the deepest pictorial narratives in Orthodox icon tradition. Seven swords pierce the heart of the Mother of God — an image that goes back to the Gospel of Luke, where Simeon prophesies to the Mother of God: "And a sword will pierce your own soul too." Each sword represents a pain she bears for suffering humanity.

In Orthodox piety, this icon is especially revered for: peace in families and the reconciliation of estranged people, protection from internal and external threats, and strength in times of personal hardship. It is not an icon of strength, but of enduring love.

The silver gives this statement form: The Mother of God is set in fine engraved lines, the golden halo shines warmly against the polished silver, the niello ornaments in the corners frame the image like a precious temple. The motif is traditional and at the same time timeless — it fits into a modern home as well as a home iconostasis.

Niello, Hand Engraving, Gilding — three techniques, one statement

The icon combines three craftsmanship techniques, each of which takes a lifetime to learn.

Hand Engraving: Every line of the motif — the face of the Mother of God, the folds of the garment, the swords — was hand-engraved into the metal by a silversmith. With a burin, millimeter by millimeter, without a template on the metal. What you see is the hand of a human — not the precision of a machine.

Niello: A black alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur is melted into the engraved depressions — at over 800 degrees Celsius. The mass indissolubly combines with the silver background. The dark ornamental bands on the frame, the deep contours in the image — that is not lacquer, no paint, no patina. It is part of the metal. It does not fade.

Gilding: The halo of the Mother of God, the border of the frame, individual ornamental elements — partially gilded. The gold tone gives the piece the sacred warmth that distinguishes this icon as a devotional object. Cold and warm, dark and light — three values in one piece.

SevChern — Silver Manufactory from Veliky Ustyug

This icon comes from Veliky Ustyug, a city in the Vologda Oblast in Northern Russia, known since 1683 for its niello silver works. The SevChern manufactory continues this tradition to this day — with a geographically protected designation of origin, comparable to Champagne protection: authentic niello from Veliky Ustyug may only be produced there.

Each piece bears the artist's manufactory mark — engraved and registered annually with the Russian Federal Assay Chamber. This is not mass-produced factory goods. It is a piece that bears a name.

As a Gift — when and for whom

A silver icon of this level is a gift for people who cannot be given ordinary things — and for occasions that deserve depth:

  • Baptism — the icon as a lifelong companion for the baptized, a treasure that grows with the child
  • Wedding — in Orthodox tradition, an icon is the most important wedding gift that parents can give their children
  • Milestone Birthday — for someone who no longer values material possessions, but meaning means everything
  • Communion or Confirmation — a gift that points beyond the moment
  • Mourning and Comfort — an icon of the Mother of God as a sign of care in difficult times
  • For Collectors — Russian silver art that should not be missing from any serious collection

Care of the Silver Icon

  • Cleaning: Soft, lint-free cloth for the silver surfaces — no abrasives, no ultrasonic cleaning
  • No silver dip bath: The niello inlays would be attacked, the deep black could be damaged
  • Protect gilding: Do not bring into contact with aggressive polishes — only wipe dry
  • Placement: Not in direct sunlight — not optimal for either the gilding or the wooden base
  • Wooden base: No extreme fluctuations in humidity — the icon board reacts to climate changes

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Mother of God of the Seven Swords mean?
The Mother of God of the Seven Swords — also known as "Softener of Evil Hearts" — is an Orthodox icon based on Simeon's prophecy: Seven swords pierce the heart of the Mother of God as a sign of the pain she bears for suffering humanity. She is revered for reconciliation, inner peace, and protection in times of need.

Is this icon liturgically usable?
Yes. The icon is crafted according to classical Orthodox iconography and can be used in home chapels, home iconostases, or for private devotion. The depiction corresponds to recognized tradition. The silver oklad (covering) is one of the highest forms of veneration of a holy image in Orthodox tradition.

How does this icon differ from mass-produced goods?
Mass-produced icons are stamped, printed, or electroplated. This icon is hand-engraved — each line a manual intervention in the metal. The niello ornaments are melted in, not printed. The manufactory mark confirms the handcraft. The difference is palpable at the first touch.

Can I give the icon as a baptism gift?
Yes — in Orthodox tradition, a silver icon is the most significant baptismal gift one can give. It accompanies the child throughout life. If you order it as a baptismal gift, we will include a suitable SilberVerse card upon request. More Religious Gifts for Baptism can be found in our collection.

How is the icon constructed?
The support is a wooden board (icon board, 25 mm thick) — the traditional support structure for Orthodox icons. On it lies the silver covering (oklad), which leaves the figure of the Mother of God free and covers the background and the frame. Total weight: 230 grams. Dimensions: 141 × 121 mm.
