Two symmetrical double goblets made of 925 sterling silver, each composed of two goblets joined back-to-back: the drinking goblet at the top, and its mirror image at the bottom. At the waist, where both halves meet, sits a red gemstone—presumably a garnet. This set belongs to the Perevörtischi family, the Russian "sturzbecher" (toss-down cup) tradition, which dates back to Peter the Great: drink empty, turn over, prove honesty.

Material and Workmanship

The double goblet is the most elegant form of the Perevörtisch principle: Both goblets of a single piece are identically decorated, with symmetrical floral niello medallions at the center, framed by foliage in black, silver, and gold. Both halves of the goblet are fully gilded on the inside, so the warm gold tone appears in the upper drinking goblet as well as in the lower base. The transition between the two halves is marked with a niello diamond pattern and the red gemstone, which like a waist holds the two forms together. The niello ornaments are hand-engraved into the silver and filled with the black sulfur-silver alloy, while the gilding sets the floral accents in warm gold. The result is a triad of black, gold, and red on polished silver—crafted in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where niello silversmithing has been cultivated for generations.

Use and Occasions

The principle behind it: You drink from the upper goblet, turn the entire cup upside down, and the lower goblet now points upwards—symmetry that is intentionally desired, both top and bottom, before and after. Two double goblets are intended for two people: father and son, two old friends, two business partners sealing a handshake. Two is the number of personal encounters, without an audience, at eye level—one pours, makes a toast, drinks empty and turns it over, and only the other knows if it was honestly drunk. Hand wash only with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, no dishwasher. Do not scrub the gilded inner surfaces; gently polish them to preserve the fine gold layer. Niello does not require special care but should be protected from harsh cleaners. When cleaning, do not touch the red gemstone at the waist with sharp objects.
