Inverted Double Chalice 925 Silver Niello — Set of 2 with Garnet

Two symmetrical double goblets made of 925 sterling silver — each consists of two goblets joined back-to-back. The drinking goblet is at the top, its mirror image at the bottom. Red gemstones (presumably garnet) are set at the waist, where the goblets meet. This set belongs to the family of Perevörtischi — the Russian tradition of "sturzbecher" (toss-up cups) dating back to Peter the Great. The principle: drink it empty, turn it over, prove your honor.

The double goblet — identical top and bottom

The double goblet is the most elegant form of the Perevörtisch principle. Both goblets are identically decorated: symmetrical niello medallions with a floral blossom at the center, framed by acanthus leaves, in black-silver-gold. Both goblets are fully gilded inside — a warm gold tone in the upper drinking goblet as well as in the lower base. The transition between the goblets is marked with a niello diamond pattern and red gemstones (presumably garnet) — the waist holding the two halves together.
