The Cognac Service Classique consists of six silver snifters on elegant stems and a round serving tray — all made of 925 sterling silver, all with the same baroque niello bands from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug. Seven pieces, one signature, one evening.

The bowls are deliberately wide and bulbous: the diameter opens upwards, capturing the aromas and slowly releasing them. 50 ml per glass — the classic Cognac amount, not too much, not too little. The tray, with a diameter of 202 mm, is the stage: it carries the six glasses, frames them, and turns serving into a gesture.

Niello on six bowls — the same motif, a manufactory's signature

What holds this service together is not just the form — it's the design.

Each of the six cognac snifters bears the same niello bands: baroque cartouches, lotus blossoms, strictly symmetrical, inscribed in deep black on gleaming sterling silver. The same motif extends across the rim of the tray — a continuous niello frieze that transforms the entire ensemble into a complete work of art. Six glasses, one tray, no two identically engraved — yet all from one hand, one atelier, one craft spanning decades.

Each snifter measures D48 × H85 mm and weighs approximately 80 g. The tray has a diameter of 202 mm and a height of 12 mm, weighing approximately 335 g. On the bottom of each piece: the SevChern manufactory mark and the 925 hallmark, which officially confirms the fineness.

Niello is not a color. It is an alloy that is melted into engraved depressions and chemically-physically bonds with the silver. Not printed, not glued on — inscribed. Forever. In 21st-century European silversmithing, this technique is virtually extinct. In Veliky Ustyug, in northern Russia, it lives on in one of the last active niello manufactories in the world.

Niello is chemically stable and does not release any substances. You can drink from these glasses — and you should, because only when used do they show what they were made for.

What spirits are suitable for this service?
Cognac and Armagnac are the classic uses — the bowl shape is designed for them. But old whisky, fruit brandies (Calvados, Slivovitz, Williams pear), rum straight from the bottle, or a good brandy also come into their own in these glasses.
