In the Relief collection, the niello decoration is not on both sides of every piece — a deliberate choice by the manufacturer that emphasizes the contrast between the worked and unworked surfaces. The knife handles are an exception: they are decorated with niello on both sides, so the dinner knife shows the same playful floral pattern on both sides. Niello is a centuries-old technique in which a dark silver-sulfur alloy is fused into fine, hand-engraved lines. The result is not a coating, but an integral part of the silver — the contrasts deepen with every polishing, rather than fading.

Each of the four pieces is made of 925 sterling silver, the internationally recognized fineness for silverware. The oval cartouches at the end of the handle feature the floral relief pattern: hand-engraved, filled with niello, and then polished until the silver and niello stand side by side in their characteristic alternation of shine and matte black.
