Description
The belly is chased all over with acanthus tendrils, while the shoulder and spout stay smooth and polished. Its advantage over a decanter: no stopper, no narrow neck — that makes pouring at the table quicker and cleaning considerably easier. The manufactory calls it the Jug Salome.
At a Glance
- Water jug in 925 sterling silver, model Salome
- Height approx. 28 cm, foot approx. 8 cm, mouth approx. 17 cm — silver weight approx. 1.15 kg
- Belly chased by hand over its entire surface: acanthus tendrils with flowers
- Shoulder and spout smooth and polished, handle plainly curved
- Interior gilded
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufactory since 1948
Why the Interior Gilding
The golden interior is not decoration but a detail with tradition: silver tarnishes over time, and the inside of a jug in particular can hardly be polished. The interior gilding gives it a golden surface.
Silversmithing has known gilded-interior cups, pots and jugs for a long time.
Chased Where You Grip — Smooth Where You Pour
The jug divides into two zones. The bulbous lower part is chased over its entire surface: acanthus tendrils, with flower umbels between them, driven into the silver by hand with punches. The upper half with shoulder and spout stays smooth and polished.
This is built that way deliberately. The chased belly gives grip — a smooth silver surface becomes slippery when wet. The smooth spout, by contrast, can be cleaned without residue and gives a clean pour, because no ornament breaks the stream. The handle is plainly curved, without decoration, so that it sits well in the hand.
Material and Origin
Solid silver is a prerequisite here, not an ornament: the chasing would not be possible on a plated layer — it would tear open during the driving. Solid silver can also be repolished over generations without becoming thinner.
Zaramella Argenti has been making pieces in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased signature style of the house.
On the Table
Water, juice, wine — the jug holds enough for a table of six to eight people and is refilled between courses. On a tray from the line it stands securely and leaves no rings on the wood.
It also works as a flower vase: the wide mouth of approx. 17 cm takes a lush bouquet. Many people put it in the middle of the table for exactly this when the table is not laid.
Engraving
The smooth shoulder between ornament and spout is the intended surface: a monogram, a date, a short dedication. It sits at eye level when the jug is standing and can be reached from both sides. Engraving after checking the piece: add the engraving service straight to your cart, and we agree the placement with you after your order. If engraving is not possible, we refund the flat fee. On request we enclose a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Occasions
For a wedding, a housewarming, a silver wedding anniversary. As a gift for hosts who often and gladly lay the table. A jug is used more often than a platter — it is therefore a gift that arrives in everyday life and does not end up in the display cabinet.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — inside too, with a long soft cloth. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver and in the long run would also attack the interior gilding. A soft brush is suitable for the chased belly. Tarnishing affects only the outside and is reversible with a silver cloth; in the tendrils the darker depth may remain. More in the guide to caring for silver cutlery and silverware.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the jug intended for?
For pouring at the table. The interior is gilded. After use, rinse and dry by hand.
How much does the jug hold?
At approx. 28 cm in height, the contents are enough for a table of six to eight people. We will tell you the exact volume on request.
Can it be used as a vase?
Yes — the shape and the width of the neck allow it. If you are looking for a vase from the outset, you will find in the line the baluster vase, the chased vase and the openwork amphora.
Solid or silver-plated?
Solid 925 sterling silver with a gilded interior, not silver-plated.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufactory.
Jug or Vase — Both
The manufactory lists this piece as the Jug Salome, that is, as a jug. The shape allows both, however: the wide belly and the tall neck take a bouquet just as well as a liquid.
If you are looking for a pure vase, you will find three in the same line: the baluster vase of approx. 46 cm, the fully chased one of approx. 46 cm and the openwork amphora of approx. 38 cm.
As a jug it is close to the decanters and jugs of the line. Its advantage over a decanter: it has no stopper and no narrow neck — which makes it quicker for pouring juice or water at the table and considerably simplifies cleaning.
