Wide rim, calm center

The ratio of the rim to the surface determines the character of a round silver piece. Here, the rim is deliberately wide: eight centimeters of ornament all around, a continuous band of foliage and blossoms without interruption. The surface, by contrast, measures approx. 38 cm and remains completely smooth.

The effect is twofold. Whatever is placed in the center — a roast, a cake, an arrangement — stands on a calm base and is not overwhelmed by the pattern. And the platter appears larger than it is because the eye is led across the wide rim to the very edge.

The work is hand-chased: hammered into the silver with punches. Over a rim circumference of well over a meter and a half, this means many thousands of strokes. This is recognizable by the fact that the tendril is alive — no section repeats the previous one exactly.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not be made this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be re-polished indefinitely because the layer becomes thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcrafting during creation and the care taken over generations.

Zaramella Argenti has been working in Padua since 1948. Their signature is the house's richly chased line.

Care

By hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased depressions. Clean promptly after serving acidic foods. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker depth may remain in the depressions of the rim, as it makes the ornament sculptural.
