The largest flat piece that Zaramella produces in this line. The contour is eight-lobed, and the rim is so wide that it provides space for palmettes, flowers, and acanthus scrolls side by side. A piece that one does not simply set out casually—and for which a cupboard shelf is generally too narrow.

Size as a category of its own

Over 54 cm is no longer a serving piece in the ordinary sense. A platter of this size does not fit into every cupboard; it should be carried by two people when loaded, and it dominates any table it is placed upon. With approx. 2.95 kg of silver, it is the heaviest piece in the series.

Historically, such platters were crafted as centerpieces or presentation plates: not for passing around, but for display. In the center of a long table, on a buffet, on a console — as a surface upon which to arrange something meant to be seen.

The rim

The contour is eight-lobed: eight arches form the outer edge, which gives the platter a sense of lightness despite its size — a smooth circle of this scale would appear ponderous.

The rim bears three motifs in succession: palmettes on the axes, with flowers and continuous acanthus scrollwork in between. All three originate from the decorative vocabulary of the Italian Renaissance, which in turn drew them from antiquity. A fine beaded edge frames the rim toward the center.

The work is chased by hand — driven into the silver with punches. Over a perimeter of more than one and a half meters, this is one of the most elaborate tasks in the line.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not even be made this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be polished repeatedly, as the layer would become thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the hand-crafting during creation and care over generations.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. Signature is the house’s richly chased line.

Intended use

The wedding buffet, the cake for a grand birthday, the roast for the entire table, the cheese board for twelve. At a reception, it holds an arrangement of glasses that remains stationary rather than being passed around.

Between occasions, it serves more as decor than as tableware: on the console in the entryway, as a base for a large vase, or on a sideboard with candlesticks. The lobed contour creates a play of light and shadow that a smooth surface would not.

Engraving

The center is the largest flat silver surface in our assortment. A family crest, a company logo, or a multi-line dedication with a date can be placed here in a size that remains readable from several meters away. Care

Clean by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — at this size, it is best to lay it flat on a cloth. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased indentations. Tarnish is a normal reaction to sulfur in the air; a silver cloth restores the luster. At this size, storage becomes a real question. A cupboard shelf with a clear width of 55 cm is rare; most houses store such pieces upright in a display cabinet or lying flat on a sideboard. This is no makeshift solution — a chased silver platter of this diameter is intended as a display piece and looks best when set up.
