Material and Workmanship

The tray thinks in zones instead of a monochrome surface. The narrow outer edge is fully gilded and highly polished — warm, rich, the first impression as soon as the piece is placed on the table. This is followed by a broader decorative ring on a light, natural silver background: four large, florally stylized blossoms with curved leafy tendrils, inlaid in niello, each offset by 90 degrees and thus symmetrically distributed over the surface. Two gilded separating rings clearly frame this zone at the top and bottom. The central field — the mirror — is again fully gilded, mirror-smooth and free of ornamentation; this is where the tray's function lies, whether for a glass, a carafe, or a cup. Niello is a silver-sulfur alloy that is melted into engraved depressions, ground down after cooling, and polished — a rich, deep black that requires no paint or lacquer and chemically-physically bonds with the silver. The gilding is done electrolytically with a layer of 0.5 microns of 24-karat gold — thin, but precisely for this reason durable, because the silver itself forms the supporting base.
