The rim of this plate is not simply round, but scrolled and slightly indented at four points – each indentation bears its own floral niello ornament, framed by fine encircling lines. Niello is a blackening alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into engraved depressions and permanently bonds with the silver – not a coating that could peel off. The center of the plate remains highly polished and free of ornamentation: a calm surface that highlights what is served, while the rim provides the artistic framing.
