Description
Saint George on horseback, lance in hand, the dragon beneath his hooves—few Christian images are understood so universally. The “St. George the Victorious, Antique Patina” tea glass holder set features this patron saint in relief on the central coat-of-arms medallion of a podstakannik made from 925 sterling silver, with the equestrian scene highlighted by the characteristic blackening in the recessed areas. It also includes a classic “Imperator” teaspoon and a diamond-cut crystal glass, presented together in a velvet-lined premium case.

Materials and craftsmanship
The holder shares the neoclassical column structure found on the other coat-of-arms sets in our collection: a handle with a beaded edge, acanthus scrolls, and a laurel wreath with a bow framing the central medallion. The medallion depicts Saint George on horseback, lance poised, with the dragon beneath his hooves, rendered in relief. The recessed areas of the relief have an antique patina, while the raised surfaces remain polished—this contrast makes the equestrian scene stand out more clearly. The included “Imperator” teaspoon features a neoclassical handle with an openwork oval finial and a laurel-leaf border; the finial has a dedicated, unadorned area for engraving an initial. The bowl is high-polish finished. The “Tschajny” diamond-cut crystal glass, with its cut geometric pattern, is a replaceable consumable part and can be reordered as needed. The blackening on the holder is a surface patina and is technically distinct from niello—niello is the fused sulfur-silver inlay technique used by the SevChern workshop. The workshop also makes a gilded version of the coat-of-arms medallion on request; we also offer both standalone holder versions without the glass, spoon, or case.
Use and occasions
Saint George is the patron saint of numerous countries and cities—including Russia, Georgia, Moscow, England, Catalonia, and other regions—and has been part of Moscow’s coat of arms since the 14th century. In the Russian Empire, the Order of St. George was established in 1769 and remains Russia’s highest military distinction to this day. This makes the set a fitting Father’s Day or grandfather’s gift for men with an interest in tradition, faith, or the military; a gift for Orthodox Christians; a name-day present for Georg, Georgi, Yuri, or George; a gift for riders, equestrians, and horse breeders; or a way to mark veterans’ tributes and military anniversaries. It is also well suited to Muscovites with ties to their hometown, Anglophiles, and boys named George or a related name on the occasion of their confirmation. Engraving and SilberVerse card
The holder’s coat-of-arms medallion already features the scene of Saint George and is not available for custom engraving; the base of the glass holder can be engraved instead. The openwork finial of the “Imperator” spoon also has a dedicated engraving area, ideal for an initial, a date, or a small family monogram. Hand engraving with a burin by a silversmith best complements the classic style. On request, we can include a 15 × 10 cm SilberVerse card, digitally designed with a personal message, free of charge.
Care
Clean the holder and spoon by hand only, using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth—never in the dishwasher, and never rub away the blackening in the recessed areas with silver polish. Wipe dry after use and store in the case to protect against air exposure and delay natural tarnishing. If the polished surfaces tarnish more heavily, use a soft silver-polishing cloth without abrasives on the raised areas only, never on the blackened recesses. The diamond-cut glass is dishwasher-safe on a short, gentle cycle, but handwashing is gentler and keeps it clearer.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Saint George?
A Roman soldier from the 3rd century who, according to legend, was executed for his Christian faith in 303 under Emperor Diocletian. The scene of him fighting a dragon is a late medieval iconographic invention, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Today, he is the patron saint of England, Russia, Georgia, Moscow, and other countries.
Does the set come in a gilded version?
The standard version has an antique patina. The workshop makes a gilded version of the coat-of-arms medallion on request, with a longer lead time.
Is the blackening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique, characteristic of SevChern in Veliky Ustyug. The blackening used here is a surface patina applied to the recessed areas.
