Niello in Art Nouveau style — diagonally flowing tendrils

What appears to be decoration at first glance is actually chemistry. Niello — a sulfur alloy that is fused into the surface at around 800 °C — permanently bonds with the 925 silver. No varnish, no coating, no foil. The blackness is in the metal itself, forever.

On the Verbena teapot, a diagonally flowing, free acanthus tendril motif unfolds. It organically winds across the pot's belly — not a circumferential border, no rigid pattern, but a free tendril design with large, sweeping leaves in an Art Nouveau character. The botanical nature of the motif corresponds with the line's name: Verbena, named after the verbena tea plant.

At the neck and base, narrow geometric niello borders frame the tendril work — almost meander-like, finely understated. They provide a structural counterpoint to the free curves of the main motif.

Behind every piece from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug stand 340 years of niello tradition and up to 15 individual work steps: drawing, etching, firing, grinding, polishing. With each polish, the contrasts deepen — the pot becomes more beautiful with age, not duller.

What distinguishes niello from normal engraving or enamel?
With engraving, material is removed — the motif remains bright. With enamel, molten glass is applied — a layer on top. Niello is something else entirely: a sulfur alloy that is fused directly into the surface at around 800 °C and chemically bonds with the silver. Is the pot dishwasher safe?
No — and this applies to all high-quality silver pieces with niello. Dishwasher detergents contain chemicals that can tarnish silver and permanently damage the surface. The Verbena should be cleaned by hand with warm water and mild detergent, then gently dry-polished. Regular use keeps the silver shiny by itself — and the niello contrasts deepen with each polish.

Is the teapot suitable as a gift for a wedding or anniversary?
