Aurora Gold — Niello meets Gold Plating

The interplay between the dark niello in the engraved lines and the warm gold plating of the surfaces is the visual principle that SevChern consistently implements in the Aurora series. The floral ornaments are hand-engraved into the silver with a burin, then the black niello alloy is fired at over 800 degrees Celsius — inextricably linked to the silver base. Gold plating follows thereafter. The result is a tea strainer that combines two material worlds in one piece.

Niello Hand-Engraving from Veliky Ustyug

SevChern, the manufacturer behind the Aurora Gold, is based in Veliky Ustyug — a city in the Vologda Oblast known for its niello silver work since 1683. The geographically protected designation of origin is on par with champagne: genuine Ustyug niello may only be produced there. The artist's manufacturer's mark is engraved into each piece, registered annually. In 1937, this tradition received a gold medal in Paris.
