Description

Sterling Silver Tea Strainer & Drip Tray — when a set is truly complete

Most tea strainers come alone. You lift the strainer out of the pot — and then what? Place it on the rim of a plate? On the counter? On the tablecloth, which will immediately regret it? This set thinks ahead. The sterling silver tea strainer gets its own tray — both made of the same silver, both with the same niello ornament, both matched down to the millimeter.

This is no coincidence: The drip tray has an exact diameter of 51 mm — as wide as the tea strainer itself. You lift the strainer out after brewing, place it in the tray, and everything stays where it belongs. No drips on the table. No makeshift placement. A set that truly is one.

It is manufactured in Veliky Ustyug, a city in Northern Russia known for its niello silverwork since the 17th century. The SevChern manufactory has continued this tradition since 1683 — 15 steps per piece, floral ornamentation on both parts, a combination of silver and niello that is not applied but fused.

The drip tray: the second piece that changes everything

A tea lover knows the problem exactly. The moment after brewing: The strainer is dripping, the hand is wet, it needs to go somewhere — and nowhere does it really fit. Many silver tea strainers are sold alone because the matching tray is missing or not made of the same material.

Here, it's different. The drip tray is not an accessory — it is part of the set. With its diameter of 51 mm, it perfectly accommodates the tea strainer. The strainer sits in it, the drops fall into the tray, and 40 ml volume easily catches everything. Even after several infusions, the table remains dry.

The crucial point: The tray is made of the same 925 sterling silver, features the same niello ornament, and comes from the same manufactory. You immediately see that the two parts belong together — because they do. No subsequent assembly, no compromises. When you give this set as a gift, you are giving a complete solution that looks like one.

Niello on tea strainer and tray — Russian ornament connecting both parts

Niello is not a coating. It is also not a lacquer or a printed pattern. Niello is a dark metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur — fused into engraved depressions and permanently bonded with the silver. Chemically, not mechanically. It doesn't go anywhere.

The floral ornamentation on this set is the result of 15 individual steps. First, the pattern is engraved, then the niello mass is applied, then fired, then polished — multiple times, with increasing fineness. Each step sharpens the contrast between the gleaming silver and the deep black appearance of the ornamentation.

This contrast deepens with age. Unlike gilding, which can flake off, or enamel, which cracks — niello gets better with age. The more often you polish, the clearer the ornament emerges. This is not a marketing term; this is metallurgy.

The SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug has been refining this technique since 1683. The city is considered one of the last centers of living niello tradition in Europe. Each piece bears the artist's manufactory mark — a mark that honors the creator, not markets them.

92 grams of 925 silver: more than a tea filter, less than a tea set

925 sterling silver means: 925 parts out of 1000 are pure silver. This is the international standard for sterling silver, recognized as a genuine precious metal in Germany, Switzerland, and the EU. Each piece in this set bears the hallmark: the 925 mark, SevChern's manufacturer's mark, and the Russian state hallmark. Three independent proofs of the material.

The difference from silver-plated cutlery or stainless steel strainers is not just in the weight — it is in the behavior. 925 silver tarnishes slightly over time, which is normal and not a defect. It shows that the material is real. A quick polish immediately restores its shine. Silver-plated cutlery, on the other hand, loses its layer over time — and another metal appears underneath.

With a total silver weight of approx. 92 g, this set is a genuine silver object — not a decorative accessory, but a functional tea tool made of precious metal. It fits standard teapots with the usual spout diameter and is suitable for loose tea of all kinds.

This set is significantly more affordable than comparable 925 sterling silver offerings — and is the only one in this category to also feature niello ornamentation on both parts.

Gift for tea lovers — Mother's Day, Wedding, Anniversary

Those who love tea usually already have tea sets, pots, and cups. What's missing is that one piece that truly stands out from everyday life — that is in hand with every brew and reminds them that someone really put thought into it.

This set is suitable for people who view tea as a ritual. For the morning cup they treat themselves to. For the tea they brew for guests, gazing at the silver resting on the drip tray. For moments when form and function do not contradict each other.

Occasions for which this set is particularly suitable:

  • Mother's Day: A silver gift that is used daily — not stored away in a cupboard. For mothers who love tea and appreciate a beautiful tea set.
  • Wedding gift: 925 silver is a classic wedding gift — here combined with a genuine everyday item for shared life.
  • Anniversary or milestone birthday: For people who already have everything — but not yet this tea strainer set of genuine niello silverwork.
  • Christmas or anniversary: When the gift should be lasting, not just beautiful.

Engraving & personal touch: Both parts — tea strainer and drip tray — can be engraved. A date, a name, a short sentence. This turns the set into a personalized gift that, even twenty years from now, will still tell who gave it, when, and why.

Upon request, we will include a personalized SilberVerse card in photo format (10×15 cm) — individually designed, suitable for the occasion, with your personal message. Currently free of charge. Simply state your wish in the order field or write to us after placing your order.

Care & FAQ

Care: 925 silver polishes in minutes with a soft silver polishing cloth. For niello ornamentation: Polish gently, no abrasive cleaners. The niello layer is permanently fused into the silver — it cannot be wiped off and requires no special treatment. After use, store dry, preferably not in a humid environment.

Cleaning: Hand wash with mild dish soap and warm water. Do not put in the dishwasher — silver is sensitive to dishwasher tablets and high temperatures.

What is the difference between a tea strainer with a drip tray and one without?
A tea strainer without a drip tray needs a solution after brewing — plate rim, saucer, paper towel. This is makeshift and leaves marks on everything. A suitable drip tray purposefully catches the water, protects the table, and keeps the set together. With this set, the tray is precisely matched to the strainer (both 51 mm wide) — you place the strainer in, and it sits. No slipping, no drips next to it.

Does the tea strainer fit standard teapots?
The tea strainer is 99 mm long and 51 mm wide — making it suitable for most common teapots with a spout and for large teacups. It is designed as a teapot attachment, not a cup insert. If you are unsure whether it fits your pot, please feel free to contact us before ordering.

Is 925 silver better than silver-plated stainless steel?
Yes — in several ways. 925 sterling silver contains 92.5% pure silver and is durable: It tarnishes slightly but can always be polished back to a high shine. Silver-plated stainless steel has a thin layer of silver over another metal — which wears off over time. When the layer is gone, the silver effect is gone. With 925 silver, the silver doesn't go anywhere. In addition, there is the hallmark: 925, manufacturer's mark, Russian state hallmark — three independent proofs of the material that silver-plated products cannot offer.

Can the set be engraved?
Yes. Both parts can be engraved — tea strainer and drip tray. An engraving makes the set a personal gift: name, date, initial, or a short sentence. Let us know your engraving request when ordering or contact us in advance. Upon request, we will also include a personalized SilberVerse card (10×15 cm, free) with your individual message.

What does "antique" mean for tea strainers — and why is new better?
Antique silver tea strainers from the 19th or early 20th century have their charm — but also their pitfalls. Silver from that era can contain unknown alloys, niello ornaments can be cracked or damaged, and an engraving can hardly be added later. A new tea strainer from the SevChern manufactory offers you the same craftsmanship tradition — unbroken since 1683 — but with fresh 925 silver, intact niello ornamentation, and the option for individual engraving. You get the tradition without the uncertainty.
